Review of the 2003 Toyota ECHO

  • We aren't fans of the Echo. For a low-budget small car, check out the superior offerings from Hyundai and Kia.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, Toyota reliability.

  • Cons

Cartoonish styling, annoying gauge placement, tilt-a-whirl handling, deceptively low base pricing.

  • What's New for 2003

For 2003, the Echo receives a new look with a redesigned front and rear fascia. The front bumper and fenders feature sharper and more prominent lines, a new chrome-slat grille and new headlamps with a distinctive bulb layout. Optional round foglamps accent the new front-end design. In the rear, a new trunk lid with chrome plate garnish, a new bumper and redesigned combination clear-lens taillights provide a more upscale look.

A new Appearance Package adds aerodynamic body enhancements, including overfenders that blend into the front and rear underbody. A rear trunk spoiler incorporates the LED high-mounted stop lamp.

The standard 14-inch wheels get a new wheel cover design, and, for the first time, the Echo can be had with optional 15-inch wheels. The new styling is topped off with five new colors.

Love my echo

Vehicle: 2003 Toyota ECHO 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

I now have 216,000 + miles. No major maintenance required. I’ve kept up on the oil changes every 5000 miles and plugs and all the filters every 50,000 miles. I also had the transmission serviced at 100,000 and 200,000 mile marks. Mileage runs about 34 hwy and 28 city. I’m not one to baby a car, I drive it hard (that’s why the MPG is so low)… I’m 6’ tall and weight is running a little over 200 lbs. The seats have held up excellent, both in form and material. I have plenty of leg and head room… Total reliability

Just getting started

Vehicle: 2003 Toyota ECHO 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

Purchased this silver 2003 auto coupe and knew immediately it was a great choice. Quick, comfortable, fun to drive and excellent mileage--even for an automatic. First mileage check netted 280 miles for 8.5 gallons, netting a very respectable 33 mpg city/highway. Believe it will get 38 hwy easily. Killer sound system, lot of room, huge trunk space for a "small" car. Surprising quiet at freeway speeds. Toyota may have made some mistakes marketing this car, but not in building it. The Yaris sedan is similar but getting one of these at a fraction of the cost and you have a great quality car.

Good car - bad dealer

Vehicle: 2003 Toyota ECHO 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

This car is remarkably quick for it's engine size and is fun to drive. I wish I could say the same of the dealer, who lied to us about the cost of installing a CD Player, which is still not working after 4 trips to the dealer. The only dangerous thing about this car is it's spedometer that is only marked every 20 MPH. It is very easy to drive faster than you intend, since most people are used to having each large mark on the spedo be 10 MPH not 20 MPH as in this vehicle.

We love it!

Vehicle: 2003 Toyota ECHO 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

This is a great little car. It fits anywhere, so parking is never that big a deal and my 6'3" brother sat comfortably with two friends in the back seat. What more could you need?

I actually like this car

Vehicle: 2003 Toyota ECHO 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl 4A)

I went to the dealership looking for a used car but I mentioned that I just wanted to look at the Echos and I looked at the two door, went on a test drive and didn't even glance at any other cars. I can't really explian why I like it, but I just do. Maybe it is the killer sound system upgrade, I don't know. I don't think the outside is cartoony or really that wierd looking, but I am 20 so that probably makes a difference.

It's a great car
