    No timing belt on an ECHO its a chain. ECHOs as they come from the factory (or at least my 2001) do NOT come with 100k mile spark plugs. It says right in the owners manual change the plugs every 30k miles. Of course if someone has installed platinum plugs they are good for 100k miles. If you use brand name gasoline then in my experience you dont need injector cleaner. ... Read More

    The cable is probably stretched. You might be able to adjust the cable at the latch end with a set screw. I have a Scion and mine may be different, but you might poke around in there and see if the cable has a "pull-through" block on the end of it at the hood latch, like they use on some bicycles to shorten the cable.

    SOME 2001 and 2002 echos have a problem with the crankshaft position sensor. It may become disconnected. If this happens engine can stall at any speed. So Toyota has issued a recall for ALL echos 01 and 02.

    I also own a 2001 purchased new. The odometer reads 146k Miles and my average over the last 5 years is 41.04. That is mostly commuting to work, 40 miles each way, 40% highway, 60% city. Lately the AC is on most of the time but the mileage for the last three months has been closer to 42 mpg. It is in winter where it drops to 36-38 mpg.

    Losing Streak: Toyota Gets Slammed With Another Big Recall. I don't know if they are saying ALL 2001 and 2002 Echos are affected or just some of them. Unless your dealership can give you some information now, I think you need to wait to see if you get a letter telling you that your vehicle is affected.

    the affected cars (some 24,000 Yaris and Echos) were all built in 2001. If yours was built that year, you may want to call Toyota customer service and ask if yours is one of the affected ones. The fact that they included Yaris models makes me think the affected cars may be partly or mostly Canadian ones.

    lynnann1, when you search the NHTSA site, loosen up your search criteria a bit. If you search for the Toyota ECHO and don't specify a year, you'll get data for 2001 forward. I am pretty sure that their ratings for 2001 should be applicable for 2000 as well. I checked the IIHS site and did come up empty there.

    When I bought my Certified Used Toyota 2000 ECHO in 2001 I thought the A/C was a little weak. It was especially weak while idling. I took it to the dealer and they checked it out and then, under the warranty, they replaced the compressor. You may want to have yours checked.

    They unfortunately were NOT included in Canadian 2001 Echos. If they were, according to Toyota, they would be good for 192000 Kms or 120 K miles (Iridium spark plugs came with 2000 Echos though).

    Just got notification of another recall concerning cold weather interfering with the power braking system. (There was a very similar one issued in the fall of 2000 as well.) To access the recall information, load http://www.nhtsa.gov and click "Recalls." You can search for the 2000 Toyota ECHO, or refer to campaign number 01V326000.
