The XLE Corolla does not come with a 5-speed automatic. Only the 2.4 engine on the XRS. The Standard, LE and XLE models will be equipped with an all-new 1.8-liter Dual VVT-i engine producing 132 Hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. I bought a used 2004 Corolla S two months ago. It had 76,000 miles on it, and a standard transmission. Con: I have very few gripes. The biggest is that I hate the power steering. It's just too light. As far as reliability, I'd still feel better about the Honda or Toyota, but this is personal bias most likely from having great experiences with my two Hondas. If you prefer ride comfort, go with the Corolla. If you prefer handling but don't want to compromise economy, get the Civic.
