Well my understanding is that Toyota re-designed the engines somewhat and also emphasized the use of synthetic oils....I think that basically, for whatever technical reasons, the oil in these engines would break down sometimes, under certain conditions. It's not like every Toyota engine does this, but enough of them did to create quite a ruckus.

First, I drive a 1998 Toyota Corolla with 41,000 miles on it. I recently noticed stains coming THROUGH all of the fabric on the door panels. It's happening on all 4 doors, and in a blotchy pattern. The dealership says that they don't know what is causing it, and suggested replacing the door panels (at quite a cost). Anybody else experiencing this or know what is causing it? Secondly, in response ... Read More

  • Squealing noise on 98 Corolla LE

Written by: riverus on Mar 23, 2001 12:07:55 PM

I have a 1998 Corolla LE with 21k mileage on it. It's making squealing noise from the front of the car when I make tight right turns. Left turns are fine. This problem started about a year ago and it's getting worse. I took the car to a Toyota dealership 6 months ago (last October). This is what they found: Bearing disc brake (break?), 1-side (left-side?) bearing and hub scored They ... Read More

  • When Corolla redesign?

Do any of you know w/ any certainty when the redesigned Corolla will come to the U.S.? I've seen several references here to it as the "2003", although at least one reference to it arriving "next year," too. (Would that be a redesigned 2002 model, arriving late this calendar year, or a 2003 arriving in late 2002?) We own a 1998 Corolla (bought new) and have been quite satisfied. We need ... Read More

I currently own a 2000 Corolla LE and have had no problems in 20,000 miles. However, my younger brother owns a 1998 Corolla CE and had the exact same problem. Being a Master Certified Auto Technician and a student of the Toyota Technical Education Network, I think I can help. The noise I believe you are referring to is ,like you said, caused by the bead of the tires. At low ... Read More

Hello, I've just purchases a 1998 Corolla LE with a 5-speed manual transmission. My previous car was a 1984 Buick Electra station wagon--so it's quite a switch. I actually have gas mileage! Last tank got 32 MPG on a mix of city/highway driving! My car has 25K miles and when I had it checked out by two mechanics the only defects were a low battery and it needed an alignment. I'm ... If Toyota does what it has done in the past, then you can expect the Japanese/European corolla being carried over to the U.S. That's what Toyota did for the current Corolla, they introduced it in 1998 when it has been out since 1996 in Japan. The 2003 Corolla looks truely impressive. I would be very happy if they just carried it over from Japan to U.S. It's longer, taller, roomier, more ... Read More

we can dream can't we? :) anyway, the Toyota Windom in Japan is more like the Lexus ES300 here. http://www1.toyota.co.jp/Showroom/All_toyota_lineup/Windom/index.html Toyota Camry in Japan is actually more or less the same car here. http://www1.toyota.co.jp/Showroom/All_toyota_lineup/Camry/gimage/top.html It has just about the same layout. Besides the obvious switch of driving position from left side to the right side, and the availability of the Nav system, almost all the things are the same. Including the ... Read More

Cliffy1: Yes, I realized that. I'm just supprised that they just started selling the totally redesigned Corolla in Europe and Japan while leaving the U.S corolla largely unchanged. Both the European and Japanese Corolla were last redesigned in 1998 (same as the U.S ones). So the current Corolla model only lasted 3 production year over there, while ours will have to soldier on for a total of 5 production year. What's ... Read More

My father has a 1998 Corolla CE, my wife has a 99 Corolla CE and I drive a 2000 Corolla CE. All of them have 4-speed automatic transmiissions. Here's a list of the problems these cars have had: 1. The 98 Corolla ( 38,000 miles on it so far): a)whenever the gas tank is filled with gas the car itself smells like gas for days. I have both a 1999 Corolla CE and a 2000 Corolla CE. My wife drives the 99 and I drive the 2000 model. My father has a 1998 Corolla CE. All 3 cars have 4-speed automatic transmission. The ride in the 2000 is rougher and noisier than in the 98 and 99 models. Worst of all, the VVT-i engine in the 2000 model is much slower than the 98, 99 engine ... Read More

I had before (and still have)1990 GEO Prizm (Corolla twin) that served me a lot and now has 240K miles on it without any repair on powertrain and I'm still very happy with it. 1998 Toyota Corolla with manual transmission - had transmission cover, throw out bearing, flywheel and disc replaced not too long ago (after only 22000 miles!). Since the repair it is kind of hard to shift first, second and third gear. Went back to dealer for adjustment under warranty but dealer said (without taking a look) that it cannot be adjusted.
