Hello, I have a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE V6 with 130,000 miles. About 1 1/2 weeks ago, I started the car in the morning after it had sat overnight, and when first accelerating, noticed that the engine revved at a much higher pitch. The noise was not out of the ordinary just a higher pitch. The car seemed to want to hesitate, but would go forward with a bit more gas ... Read More

"..jump into traffic....car stalled a bit..." You undoubtedly experienced the 1-2 second downshift "re-acceleration" delay/hesitation common to the fleet since at least 2003. Toyota seems to be doing their best to eliminate or shorten that 1-2 second delay but the fact of the matter is that with the new (as of 2000) real-time ATF line pressure control technique some delay, mostly random appearing delays, are inevitable.

I don't think there are really any preventive measures to take. I guess you have to sit back and wait for it to happen. I spent 1300.00 for repairs and 345.00 for the kit to repair the head. Toyota knows about this problem, but they are acting like this is the first they are hearing about it.
For what it's worth, there are hundreds of instances with the Toyota 2AZ-FE headbolts pulling out of the block. It happened to me too on my 03 Camry with 117k miles. It seems the affected vehicles are 02-06 Camrys, Rav4's, Highlanders, and Scions all using this same 4 cylinder motor. It indeed is a coverup.

Since I don't like either brand, I had the dealer replace the tires with Michelin tires, before I took delivery of the vehicle. By choice, I service my verhicle ... Read More
Pengwin: the fit/finish and quality of materials used in the interiors of cars has nose dived the past 2 years with few exceptions. I leased a 2000 Toyota Solara SLE with leather and owned a 2005 Camry XLE with leather. Both of these cars had thick padded dashes, soft touch materials throughout and impeccable fit/finish. I currently own a 2005 Sienna and the the interior is very good. I leased a ... Read More
I think people, from my interaction with them everyday at work, that many Honda/Toyota/Nissan/Mazda buyers look at CR for reliability and quality before they look at JD Powers. From talking to a lot of people in the auto industry, connected to many different mfgr's, JD Powers is not really regarded as a great source for anything. They are more like a Car and Driver or Motor Trend. What does "overall quality" ... Read More
Let us take JD Powers word on overall dependability, in that it represents a typical buyer and a real scenario. This is how some of the midsize sedans stacked up: Honda Accord: 4/5 Nissan Altima: 3/5 Toyota Camry: 3/5 Ford Fusion: 3/5 Hyundai Sonata: 3/5 Saturn Aura: 2/5 Mazda6: 2/5 VW Passat: 2/5 The only car that is said to be better than Camry is the Accord. But, Accord isn’t something ... Read More
Actually I've been selling Toyota Camry sedans since model year 1997. And I've been driving Toyota products since 1981. First was an 81 Celica, then came an 85 Toyota VAN LE, then the first Camry; a 1992, then a pre-owned 93 which I drive daily. Then a 1997 which my wife drives daily since the 92 was totaled and she walked away with airbag burns to her face and a very ... Read More
Mackabee----I wish that you were correct, but YOU ARE WRONG!!!! I also own other Camrys (1992,2000,2003). I came to this forum to see if other people were experiencing the problems that I was having with my 07 Camry LE 4cy/5spd automatic. Since Toyota has issued several TSB's to address "HESITATION,AND SHIFTING PROBLEMS WITH THE 2007 CAMRY", Toyota was, and is, aware of these problems. I do not think that they would ... Read More
I wonder how much pre-market testing was done on the very annoying 5spd transmission that was put in the 07 Camry. Yes, latest TSB fixed the hesitation problem, but this problem, along with the annoying downshift/upshift (with cruise control engaged), was present when the car was manufactured. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I am truly amazed that Toyota could manufacture and sell a car with these annoying features. ... Read More
wwest---Wish they had stayed with the 4spd automatic transmission for the 2007 Camry 4cyl like the one in my 2003 Camry 4cyl.. No FE was gained by going to the very annoying 5spd automatic transmission, at least not in my 07 Camry LE 4cyl/5spd automatic. As you say replacing these annoying transmissions is probablly too expensive, but it sure would help them in the loyal public support and advertising area. Just ... Read More
wwest----- Since my 2003 Camry LE 4cyl/4spd automatic gets better FE (fuel efficiency) than my 2007 Camry LE 4cyl/5spd automatic, and without any annnoying upshift/downshift, I wish Toyota would have had a better design for 2007 transmission. Do you think Toyota will design a CVT to replace the "BADLY DESIGNED TRANSMISSION IN THE 2007 CAMRY"? A great PR effort on their part would be to replace these annoying transmissions in the ... You're missing the point elroy. I'm only making a counterpoint to you and the others here who keep putting Toyota and Honda up on a pedestal and saying that they're perfect. No, Honda and Toyota are not perfect. But if the problems were as widespread as you imply they are, people would not still be buying them. I bought my second Accord, because of prior experience with the first, which I ... Read More
wwest- I understand your position and view on this matter. I hope you understand my dissappointment and frustration with my $20,000 investment (2007 Camry). As an owner of 3 earlier Camrys (1992,2000,2003), I assumed that I was purchasing the 2007 Camry which would perform as well as my earlier models. I was wrong. Before purchasing the 07 Camry, I neither heard nor read any mention of the 5spd transmission annoyances. If ... Read More
Ten years ago, I decided to explore the new car territory. I had owned three Toyotas before that, starting with 1982 Celica-Supra, 1988 Corolla GT-S coupe and finally a 1992 Camry. With plenty of drive time behind Taurus and Camry, the two midsizers were out. I test drove Maxima, Altima (wasn’t a part of the plan), Accord, Intrigue and Passat. Grand Prix was a part of the plan, but the combination ... Read More
Hi meanoldteacher (Ray): I have been following this problem since I purchased a 2007 V6 Camry in January. I understand the frustration with this issue on the part of the owners, and I believe the problem is "real," and it is a "dangerous" operating characteristic of the vehicle. Now having said that, I must also state that my 2007 V6 XLE Camry does not have the issue that is being described ... Read More
These are the figures of complaint from the NHTSA relating to POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION defects in the Camry from the year 2002 to 2007. 2002---29 2003---14 2004---22 2005---30 2006---2 2007---74 We can see from the figures that apparently Toyota has solved the automatic transmission problem in 2006 but only to screwed it up in 2007 with the introduction of their poorly designed and poorly tested DBW system. It is worth ... Read More
Under the correct, unique, circumstances ALL DBW Toyota FWD vehicles will exhibit these symptoms. Find and read the wording of the TSB Toyota issued in the spring of 2003 to cover the 2003 Camry. It spells out, very explicitly, three of the circumstances wherein owners can expect, or not, to encounter this symptom.
My 4cyl. 2007 Altima purchased about two weeks ago was about $200 less than my comparably equipped (automatic) 2003 Altima 2.5S. That summarizes exactly how I feel about this car. In a word: WOW! The redesign is excellent inside and outside -- firmness of seating notwithstanding. Sportier than Toyota Camry and without the acceleration issues many consumers have ascribed to Camry. What's not to like about the 2007 2.5S Altima? The ... Read More
The service manager said something that piqued my interest and so I looked at the engine ID number and it turns out that the 4 banger I have is the "2AZ-FE" engine with a timing chain and the Toyota website does state to change the timing belt on the "1MZ-FE" engine only which is the 6 cylinder engine. So, technically speaking the website is not incorrect, just a little vague. All ... Read More
Okay guys, I called the Toyota dealer in Asheville and the service manager confirmed that my 2003 Camry 4 cylinder has a timing chain and she confirmed that the website was incorrect. I must say I'm a little surprised that the website is incorrect but then again Toyota has lots of cars and I guess it would be next to impossible to be totally correct each and every time on every ... Read More
Well, then the Toyota website is incorrect. When I input a 2003 Toyota Camry is says to change the timing belt at 90,000 miles......the website must be wrong. Like I said, a dealership would be able to tell you.
This is getting silly. I have both a 2004 and a 2005 Camry, with 4-cylinder engines. Both have timing chains. This 2.4-liter 4-cylinder was introduced with the 2002 models, replacing the former 2.2-liter 4 with the timing belt (I had one of those too). The Toyota maintenance website makes no distinction between the 4-cyl. and the V6? Dealers? Well, the salesmen aren't necessarily going to know, but certainly the service manager ... Read More
Clarence, Read my previous post about your timing belt. The Toyota website says to replace it around 90,000 miles. Another poster said you have a timing chain....I am not sure if that is correct. Your dealer can't lie to you about a timing belt or chain....they are two completely different things.
Okay. If that it true than I appologize for my previous post. I was told differently. I just checked Toyota's website and it says for the 2003 Camry that the timing belt should be replaced at 90,000 miles. I was told the 2007 I-4 is the first 4-cylinder engine with the timing chain......and that prior V-6's had the timing chain, but not the V-4's.
