Does it start with the fuse removed from the CD? Sounds like you possibly have a short in your CD circuit. Electrical problems can be very hard to chase down, and most mechanics won't work on them because it takes so much time and owners get agitated at the cost. Did you try Googling "Toyota Avalon 2001 wiring diagram"? If that doesn't work, call the dealer and get an estimate. Maybe ... Read More

I am no expert on the sludging problem, however, my best advice would be to ask for service records to make sure the oil was changed regularly. Those engines were fine AFAIK if properly maintained.

Thanks for the information. I'll check if it is Auto Temp or manual controls. I'm not sure if it is an XL or XLS. I agree that 12,500 is a little high. I'm also very apprehensive about purchasing a toyota V6 from that year due to the oil sludging problems that I've read about. Is the sludging problem exaggerated or something that I should be legitimately concerned about?

However, I had a 2001 Solara SLE-V6 convertible and ended up with a lot of hood chips. The Solara board at that time was full of complaints re: this problem. And if I'm not mistaken, hot brake fluid is hydrophyllic, and will attract water vapor from the air. As the fluid cools the water will precipitate out. Left long enough, the water will pit the cylinders and cause leaks and spongy brakes. Happens ... Read More
