I have a 2008 LTD with 178,000 miles - car runs beautifully, I have not changed any of the fluids other than oil (Mobil 1). I have not touched the AC. My daughter has a 1999 Toyota Solara - the AC runs great - never touched to date. With regards to brake fluid - contaminatiion darkens it. Toyota builds a great product - isn't that part of the reason why we ... Read More
I just did a bunch of research and found the following regarding Toyota Avalons: The 3.0 V6 with VVTi is interference whereas the standard 3.0 V6 without VVTi is NOT interference. Source: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/154-1st-generation-1995-1999/357910-avalon-v6-- interference-engine.html VVTi was introduced in 1999 on the 2nd Generation Avalons. But the 1st Generation Avalons were still made and sold in 1999 and they did not have VVTi. So if your car is 1999, like mine, find ... Read More

Yes I did pick up the 2010 Avalon Ltd on Saturday! Mine has the light gray interior too. You will like the light gray in your 2011, I'm sure. So far so good.......the smart key seems pretty easy to get accustomed to. My husband is 6'3" and thinks the headroom is quite good. TOYOTA DEAL: HERE COMES THE SLUDGE JUDGE Mark Rechtin, Automotive News / January 8, 2007 LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. has quietly settled a class-action lawsuit that covers about 3.5 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles that may have been damaged by engine oil sludge. Details of the settlement, which allows for third-party mediation of sludge claims rejected by Toyota, have been mailed to 7.5 million current and previous ... Read More
I recently bought toyota avalon 1999. I received one remote which is not working. Dealer told me that it should be the dead battery. But it is still not working after replacing the battery. Needing some advice from other Avalon Owners. Looking to buy a 1999 in impecable condition with 77K miles on it. Now my mechanic says to steer clear of the Avalons specifically, and go for another toyota, siting the fact that they are American made and therefore faulty. (My question would be--how much different could they be if still from the same company standards? Maybe this logic doesn't work in this case). ... Read More
I got the same reaction at my local dealership. However, if the past is any indication, the 2009 model should be the last year for this generation of the Toyota Avalon. The first generation was from 1995 through 1999, the second generation from 2000 through 2004, and now the third generation from 2005 through 2009. I believe we will see something new for the fourth generation in 2010. I am wondering ... Read More
So the question Toyota needs to answer is "Is it worth keeping arround?" The business case has been done, and the conclusion at this time is, it's not worth keeping around, or at least not worth a redesign. They're going to replace it with a stretched version of the Camry, called a Camry XL. I can only speak for myself, who has loved the Avalon since 1999. A long Camry would ... Read More
I just bought a 2000 Toyota avalon XLS private sale for $7000 CAD. The couple that sold it to me were really cool people. I was a bit worried because you never know what your going to get from a private sale. Try $1200 or less to replace a 4 speed transmission in a Buick(or other GM with one). Yes, the new GM 5-6 speed models are also similarly pricey, so the smart money is on the older 4 speed design. That's some serious money saved, and last I checked, they are very reliable as all of the bugs have been worked out. It's not a fun car. But it's virtually as reliable ... Read More
I have a 1999 Toyota Avalon with a factory installed stereo that includes a CD Player. I wanna play ipod using auxiliary input. how should i do that?
I am looking at a 1999 Toyota Avalon. I have heard reports in here about the more recent ones of how they have trnasmission probs and other oddities. Can somebody tell me what to expect from a 1999 Avalon? What kind of mileage could they run as high as before the car was done for? It has 149,000 miles on it.
It is a well documented scenario that the recent Toyota DBW software would intentionally delay the engagement of tranny - to avoid excessive wear on drive shaft as reported on early Lexus RX. Technically, it is unlike, e.g., the recent MBZ 7-gear tranny issue or 1999-2004 Honda tranny where the tranny hardware actually failed. To the average consumers, that shows up as "problematic" and "quirky". All is true. Maybe Toyota should ... Read More

It did not work properly (same problems) and after 300 miles was replaced with a THIRD ... Read More
Ramesh...couple of points to consider on the 99 avalon.. first of all, you asked if it would be worth paying the 2500 in repairs to fix the car... well that also would depend on how much they are selling the car for. Hi, I recently came across an 1999 Avalon XLS for sale that had low mileage - 90K miles. I had the car inspected by Toyota dealership for a pre-buy checkup. The fan belt ... Read More

Usually happens when an error code is stored. Anytime the engine has a problem, the ECM detects it and shuts off the trac control. Don't know why Toyota did that. Check for an error code 1st. Also, does it come on after you start the engine like within 3 seconds or so, or does it come on while driving? Steve
I've had a couple of cars that received black circles in CR for reliability (1991 Ford Escort and 1999 Mercury Cougar) and I put a lot of miles on both of them (180K on Escort and 125K on Cougar). I put 92k on a 1999 XL and the car drove like a new one when traded for an '03 XL. Toyota has issues, yes. You can read about them in this and other forums. You must change the fluid at 30k max ... Read More

Hi AB. We just drove an 05 Avalon. I had driven one before, but my wife had not. I really wanted to compare the Touring to the other models, but they had none. Of course, my wife loved it. Several times I have mentioned that my 1999 XL had the oil changed by Toyota at intervals of about 7000 miles. It went 92k before trade-in and never burned a drop between changes. It is worse than that. With the new recall announced yesterday, Honda now has five model years of cars with transmission problems (1999-2004 models). My MDX is part of the new recall. Always follow the guidelines in the maintenance log for the coolant and the transmission fluid. I put 94,000 troublefree miles on a 1999 XL, then purchased an '03, as mentioned in several prior posts. The aluminum engine and transmission need clean fluids as they operate at high temperatures. This is cheap insurance against trouble and keeps the warranty in force. Mine was always serviced by a Toyota dealer but you may ... Read More

Over the same route, bumps were loud and jolting in the 2000 model relative to the 1999. The 2000 had 16" Michelin MXV4's. A rental 2001 XLS that I drove over 300 miles ... Read More
