2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Review

This is my initial review of a 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Touring model, after three days of driving it.

I love this car. It's huge – about the size of the Jaguar XJ VDP s/c it replaced, with a bigger trunk, too. It's the quietest car I've ever driven, too. How Toyota coaxes 40 mpg out of this size car, and still makes it scoot, is a mystery.

It's got gobs of low-down electric torque. Even though 0-60 is around 8 seconds, real-world it feels much quicker than that. In-gear passing is stupendous – no waiting for engines or turbos to spool up, just mash the throttle and watch the mph climb.

Styling: all subjective, of course, but I like the new design. Has a bit of Audi A7 in the rear.

Best Features

The interior fit & finish, and quality of materials is very good. There are still a couple of questionable pieces (the door pockets are cheap plastic, and the headliner feels hollow and flimsy), but everywhere else, it's all stitched leather, wood, metal, or high-quality plastics. Superb interior. Keyless entry & start, lots of gadgets, bluetooth pairing for music, pretty decent stereo, and best of all, a nearly silent cabin to enjoy it in. I've averaged 39 mpg in city driving, a mix of outright aggression to see what it can do (plenty!) and conservative, maximize-mileage driving. Handling is great for a car this size. Controlled ride; this is no boat. It hustles through turns.

Worst Features

Better tires could lower the sound d/b levels even more. About all I hear is the tire noise; everything else is serene. Entune: complete redesign, please, Toyota. It's not very intuitive, not very useful, and I still haven't gotten it to work consistently with my iPhone. The nav screen is the one area that Toyota really cheaped out, and it's a shame since this is the main interface between person and car. My old Prius had a better screen. Still, the rest of the car is superb. The texture of the leather-wrapped steering wheel feels odd. Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't feel like real leather. The wheel size/shape is great, though. These are all nitpicks-the car is amazing overall.
