I have a 2006 4runner 4.7 8 cylinder engine, 125,000 miles. I starting to get a high pitch whining noise on acceleration. Will fluids help my problem? I really need the advice please, I don't have 4,000 dollars for a new transmission.
I had the same problem with my 05 4Runner. It was something very simple and cheap. A good friend of mine, a mechanic in NY, told me to buy a bottle of "Limited Slip" transmission additive. There are several types on the market. I put about 4 ounces in the tranny, and the transmission shudder stopped immediately! I had changed out the tranny fluid with the "WS" type 3 times, and ... What ever happened with message #244 from the legal assistant in some lawfirm? His message was: "edpol: I am sorry, this seems to be the only way to reach you. I have been trying to accumulate, from as many sources as possible, any information about problems with the Toyota 4Runner transmission, and with Toyota. The reason for my request has to do with the present lack of information available to me. ... Read More
Hey John, I've had the same thing happen to me but I find it's only when the wheels are turned hard backing out. You put it in drive, press the accelerator and she doesn't respond until you start to straighten the wheel, then, it jumps forward and you have to hang on tightly and quickly release the gas pedal. I'm still dealing with my acceleration problem where I slow to enter ... Read More
I agree 100%!! Mine is a May, 2009 4Runner and had what feels like trans problem since day-one! I have been in close contact with my dealership service manager and e-mail her all of the comments I read so she can keep record. I have file a complaint with the national highway assn and Toyota and sent the TSB# also. I got some form letter from Toyota thanking me for my ... Read More
Actually Toyota didn't even mention anything about doing the computer flash. I decided I wanted it done after reading some of the messages out here. My dealership is basically handling it as if there is no problem. That this is the way the new electronic transmissions are and there is nothing they can do about it. Between me and my husband, we have owned Toyotas all the way back to 1976 ... Read More
I am having the exact same problem with my 2009 4Runner. Dealership just keeps telling me that its the way the new electronic transmissions are. Also had a 06 and wish now I had kept it. I did do some more research and found some info worth passing along on another website blog. Here's what 3 other owners had to say: "I have the same hesitation (Shifting) problem with my 2010 ... Mr. Anwyl's open letter to Mr. LaHood was interesting reading, but carefully suggesting that the problem could very well be driver error as in the Audi case decades ago does a disservice to Edmunds.com readers. He points out the growing number of reports filed with DoT after Toyota announced problems with floor mats and sticking pedals and the media got ahold of the issue. It is almost as if he is ... WOW.. I have a 2010 4runner and am experiencing the same issue. I took it to to different dealers and they cant find a problem. Mine also makes a slight rattle noise when in gear at a stop light. When in neutral or park the noise goes away.
Like many here, I've often engaged 4H when needed. It's always worked although it doesn't engage immediately as most electronic systems are slower to engage. Binding scares me, but there was almost always some slippage when I used it. And fxoffroad is correct that it'll do the job and be noisy in hard turns. I just wouldn't use it full-time unless there was at least the potential for some slippage. On ... Read More
OMG - I have the same problem "When I slow down (but don't stop completely) to turn a corner, either right or left turn, and then accelerate, the transmission doesn't respond, engine revs a few seconds, then the transmission catches up to the engine." My credentials before you question them. I've been driving 4x4's since 1976. If it is binding you are ruining the 4wd. I have the 2003 model with the AWD option. It never binds. But if I try the same thing in 4H with my 2009 Ram, or my former 1991 K1500, 1997 S-10 Blazer, 1986 Toyota SR5 PU, 1985 F-250, or my 1966 K10, it will bind. So get ahead and ... Read More
I also have the same problem with the transmission. Bought a 2009 4Runner new in May of 2009. When I slow down (but don't stop completely) to turn a corner, either right or left turn, and then accellerate, the transmission doesn't respond, engine revs a few seconds, then the transmission catches up to the engine. I am also an owner of the 2010 4Runner Limited with NAV and I have done extensive research about the oil change subject. Yes, the owners manual does say every 5000 miles to change the oil, but I believe (not sure though) around February or later Toyota will distribute to the owners of the 2010 4Runner that was purchased in 2009 the change that will state the oil change to be ... The Third row seat isn't as tight in the new 4Runner as it is in the Rav4. But from experience the 2009 Sienna would be a much better choice with three kids. Can someone please give their opinion on the third row of the 2010 4Runner, for instance, its too tight, impossible to get to, pointless? For instance, on the 2010 RAV4 third row it looks like Toyota moves the second row up, making all back rows miserable. Looks like Chicagoland won't get 4Runners with third row. Looking at Pilot, Outback, HL, Venza or 4Runner to replace the 2002 Forester because its getting ... Read More

The decision was easy for me as soon as Toyota announced no V8 in the 2010 4Runner. The new 4Runner is bigger, heavier, and more expensive with only a V6. It doesn't have near the HP and torque. I needed the 4WD for snow and the V8 to tow 5200 lbs in mountains. And the gas mileage is the same or better with the Kia. The Borrego has exceeded my expectations ... Read More

I share your grief. I have a 96 4Runner V6 with 232K miles. I have been towing 5100 lbs with this vehicle about 4 times a year and knew I really needed a V8. Nary a hiccup since I have owned it, but it is old. I have been waiting patiently for the new 4Runner V8. What an unbelievable decision by Toyota. Therefore, I just ordered a 2009 Kia Borrego V8, ... I was at the local Toyota dealership and saw the new 4runner roll off the truck today. I have to say it was sharp, very rugged looking. The vehicle is larger in all areas compared to last year. I am looking ... Read More
2009 4Runner - 4300lbs with 236hp which gives it 18.22lbs/hp vs 2010 4Runner - 4675 lbs with 270hp which gives it 17.31lbs/hp. In this case, the lower number wins. I'll take the off road capability along with body integrity over a little pick up. Maybe the new one is geared a little different. After renting several compacts ove the past several months having a locked gas latched, I am surprised that ... Read More
I think we need to step back and define "skid plate." According to the Toyota 4Runner (US) specs, the SR5 comes standard with engine and fuel tank skid plates. The SR5 V6 4x4 has an additional transfer case skid plate. Or are we talking about this type of accessory skid plate, as shown on the 2009 model?
I would have love to see/own a Toyota designed by Nissan. I chose the 2005 4Runner over the 2005 Pathfinder and the Venza over the 2009 Murano. The Nissans were great; very competitive, but the Toyotas were the better pick for me. YMMV. Nissan interiors have become a lot better generation-over-generation, versus the 4Runner's debatable decline (for example, hard dash plastic on the 5th Gen). Really, how many of us care ... Read More

"I noticed that Edmunds shows the 2009 4Runner 4.7L V8 as 260 HP. But the 2009 Sequia 4.7L V8 as 310 HP. " That's a different (and newer) engine. The 2009 Sequoia has a 4.6l, not a 4.7l V8. If you are in the US, that price is highfor an SR5. Since Toyota reduced 4-Runner production, my experience is you will pay more today than 9 months ago. Just not many available. Cash For Clunker cleaned their lots, so even in the case of the 4-Runner they are motivated to significantly discount. Just my experience.

Toyota has greatly limited V8 production on the 2009 4Runner. So it would not surprise me (although it will disappoint me) if the V8 is not offered on the 2010 4Runner. Performance with a 4-cylinder will be a bad joke.
Thanks for the info -- it's great. Hopefully there's a way to post it (the other way would be one of public file uploading sites -- Google "file upload"). I'm guessing Toyota is trying to bring the base price down significantly from the $28K starting point of the 2009 SR5. Hi, I am also searching for a low price for 4ruuner 4wd sr5 v6, and was told each trim has its regional build, and that a vehicle with standard equipment (without options) should be ordered directly from the manufacturer.
From Toyota.com: "The Toyota 4Runner SR5 V8 2WD was last redesigned in 2003 and the next major change is expected in 2010." See http://www.toyota.com/businessfleet/vehicles/4runner/coo_vehicle.html . Of course, the key word is "expected". No one expected the economic meltdown, either. I went to the 2009 NYC auto show. No one at the Toyota display would admit to knowing anything and of course, no 2010 4Runner was on display (they did have a ... Read More

At the Milwaukee auto show, the Toyota rep told me he has heard they are seeking a more basic less "luxury" type SUV. He also said it was postoned to around November of 2009. Looks ... Read More
