Review

I just passed my 3 year anniversary with my 2006 4Runner Sport and the build quality on this vehicle continues to amaze me. (knock on wood) To date I've not had a single repair item, the only service work I've had done are oil changes and regularly scheduled maintenance. Totally awesome even by Toyota standards! For a mid-size SUV the 4Runner is as good as it gets with a strong V6 motor, adequate mileage, great styling and comfort and the awesome reliability that I previously mentioned. For the first time in a long time I'm 3 years into a vehicle and I'm not thinking about unloading it for the next bright shiny thing that catches my attention. It's a beautiful thing :) !!

Favorite Features

Roll down rear window, styling, strong V6 motor that doesn't suck gas, comfortable seats, great ride (once you upgrade from the stock Dunlops which are just ok - I put Michelin Cross Terrains on mine and it now rides like a dream).

Suggested Improvements

More headroom - I'm 6'3" and I'm barely making it with the sunroof. Better stock stereo system - for a mid 30k vehicle the stock stereo in mine left a lot to be desired. Toyota puts a better stock stereo in the 15k Scion than in the 'runner.

Review

I have had this vehicle for three years and, at 80K plus miles, I have not had a single mechanical malfunction. It drives great and has great roadability. It is easy to maneuver, even in small/tight spaces. The driver sits high and this provides great overall vision of your surroundings. In regards to quality, can't beat Toyota's quality or dependability.

Favorite Features

Firm seats and handling. This SUV handles very well for its size.

Suggested Improvements

Placement of the MP3 connection should be more convenient. Located inside the center console, it is a bit tedious to get to.

Last post was 9/6/2006. Nothing has changed except the gas mileage has improved from 19.5 to 21 mpg combined. Absolutely zero defects after 3 years and 36K miles. Best of all, my wife still loves it. It is the best vehicle, new or used that I have owned during the past 43 years. Wife wished we had bought leather with heated seats but the cloth is great. Handled great on snow and ice the past 2 winters. Plenty of power, great handling, and visibility. Still looks like new.

Favorite Features

Rear cargo area with rear fold-down seats. 4WD handles the ice like a champ. Handling, visibility, and appearance. Reliability and power. Power seats and sun roof. Radio controls on steering wheel. Fog lights work great.

Suggested Improvements

None.

Always had Jeeps before. Bought this 4Runner and I have to say that I'm very impressed. The 4wd system can run in 4wd on dry pavement, or you can run it 2wd. Locking center differential is electronic, so you don't have to worry about the transfer case binding on dry pavement (since it can be turned off). Interior room is very good, low, flat load floor in the rear is good, and ease of putting rear seats down is easier than the Jeep. The v6 is an excellent choice with plenty of power, and decent towing capacity for small jobs. I like the driver instrumentation and the stock radio has an MP3 player capability. Good fuel economy with the v6. Avg. 19-20 mpg.

Favorite Features

Rear Load floor, easy of putting rear seats down, V6 engine, 4WD.

Suggested Improvements

The seats, though supportive could be a little softer - though they have very good adjustability.

Review

I love this SUV. Lots of power, great handling, and plenty of room. Can't beat the roll down back window unless you get a convertible, but who wants one of those. Would recommend this car to anyone who likes to, or needs to spend a lot of time in the car. Also you never have to ever fix anything, and if you run synthetic, you barely ever have to change the oil either. The car is completely awesome.

Favorite Features

Roll down back window, and navigation.

Suggested Improvements

It would be nice if they made even one TRD part for this car, also a little higher suspension would be nice as well as a button that would truly shut off the vsc for offroad purpose. Also a 2wd to 4wd option for the V8 would be nice instead of only AWD.

Very comfortable drive compared to my last car was a 2002 Pathfinder. The balance of the car while taking curves are remarkable due to its wider wheelbase. Some of the interior features could have been improved but overall excellent vehicle.

Favorite Features

Smooth drive, powerful engine.

Suggested Improvements

The power switches for the doors are very awkwardly positioned. Could have included more power outlets.

I researched all my options before buying my used 06 T4R, and I don't regret any minute of my decision. It has been over 6 mths and approx 12k miles, and it has been extremely reliable. I have driven it from CA to GA (avg 23 mpg @ 75+mph) and GA to WA with a 5x8 uhaul trailer (avg 19 mpg @ 65+mph), this SUV is bullet proof. I avg 20 mpg around mixed in town driving. It does everything I need it to, from primitive camping trips, off-roading, towing, and future snowboarding trips. It has the perfect balance between utility and practicality and efficiency and performance. If your considering buying one, I highly recommend it. You won't regret it.

Favorite Features

Efficiency and performance. Sporty/quality appearance. Large sunroof and utility capabilities.

Suggested Improvements

Only thing I can think of would be to add an additional ac power outlet in front cabin. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing.

Although I've only own this SUV for 4 months, I must say this is probably the best SUV I've owned so far. (I've had a 95 Jeep Grand and 07 Honda Element.) I originally thought the XREAS suspension was some hokey-pokey nonsense but after driving my friends 05 SR5. WOW, what a difference. this thing has plenty of power, the interior is almost as quiet as my sister's 08 RX350, I love the black interior, the power seats are comfortable. I can go on raving about this SUV for hours but I'll just keep it short. Bottom line, go drive one and experience this great SUV for yourself!

Favorite Features

Just about everything. Aux jack, powerful v6 motor, sunroof, super quiet interior, Toyota reliability, I can go on forever.

Suggested Improvements

This is my only complaint about this SUV: seriously Toyota, why did you guys put the window control where it is? it is the most annoying/awkward location ever!!!

2006 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

We ordered our 4Runner from Japan because we couldn't buy a Sport Edition with GPS navigation off a dealer's lot. We also added 4WD. The car rides and handles great. ZERO mech. probs. Powerful V6 with decent economy. You really don't need the V8. The 4WD and off-road stability systems are amazing. I used them in a rare snow & ice storm in the Chisos Mtns in Big Bend National Park and was amazed at this SUV's sure-footedness. A few quibbles: Front cupholders stink. Must contort arms & hands to reach window and door lock switches on doors. Tire pressure and oil change idiot lights are annoying to reset. Overall, though, we LOVE this SUV. Even $4 gas can't persuade us to part with it!

Favorite Features

GPS navigation and premium sound system is worth the bucks! Sport Edition trim package looks and handles best. 110v AC power adaptor in center console is very handy for plugging in standard 2-prong, electrical devices without having to use a cigarette lighter jack adapter. iPod jack is cool too!

Suggested Improvements

Toyota can't seem to get the front cupholders right. They stunk on my 98 4Runner and on this one too! Why can't they get this small detail right?! Interior door armrests need to be re-designed so that it's easier to reach the controls on the door without contorting our forearms and hands.

This car is amazing! Smooth rides, great handling, an all-a-round do everything car. Towing is exceptional (towed a 6x12 trailer for 2000 miles and didn't even notice it). Off road would be fun, but my wife won't let me take her car off road. I want another for myself. One person said the low-preasure light for the tire comes on. I found it to be the spare tire. All the other tires get checked and the spare gets forgotten. Toyota even has a sensor on the spare... way cool, but don't forget it or the light will bug you.

Favorite Features

I love the internal computer that gives the fuel economy and range of the gas tank. I also like the electronic 4x4 switch, it makes things very easy.
