Review of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

  • Highly capable whether on the pavement or in the dirt, the 4Runner is a well-rounded midsize SUV, and one of our favorites, particularly with this year's third-row seat option.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Powerful engines, well mannered on pavement, rugged off-road capability, comfortable cabin, long list of standard equipment.

  • Cons

Cargo capacity isn't much more than what many compact SUVs offer.

  • What's New for 2004

A third-row seat is now optional on SR5 and Limited models. Black running boards are standard on SR5 and Sport models, and the optional navigation system now includes a rearview back-up monitor.

Worth every penny

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

This is our 2nd 4Runner. Bought it because we loved our previous one so much, but needed 4WD to move to Alaska. This truck is awesome, reliable, durable, go anywhere vehicle. Idrove from GA to AK without any problems, hauling a full trunk, two dogs and my wife. Handles the snow trails without any hitch. Bought it used at 56K miles two years ago. Now has 78K miles. We had owned a limited 2006 and drove it everywhere as well. Sad to traded that one in for a Land Cruiser ( also 5 star terrific), but needed 4 WD. No engine/drivetrain/electronic/brakes/etc problems. HIGHLY recommeded. I see lots of SUV here in AK, but would drive this one any day ( with the exception of the LC)

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

Bought with 118,000 miles. Got a great deal and drives like new. Solid as a rock with no weird noises. Driver seat a little to short. Other than that its one of the best on the market for this year. You spend a little more but you get more. When the world ends the only thing alive will be cockroaches and toyotas. Customer for life! Thanks Edmunds great site very helpful!

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

After some haggling at the dealership over this car being a CPO we came to terms. The dealer would replace the two missing key FOBs, fix the significant scratch on the right side and make this look like it should for a CPO. The third row seat is missing on this, but that's ok with me. Now the vehicle. This is as smooth as many cars as I have driven. Not sure where the editors came up with the harsh ride, but I have driven this so far from Madison, WI to Toledo 3 times in the 60 days, and twice from Madison to Hayward, WI. I am averaging 21.8 MPG over all with my best being 23.7 MPG Hwy at 75mph. The cabin is quiet and comfortable and well laid out for long trips. I have the v-6.

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

This has been an excellent car so far. I bought it with 40k on it, and I have 56k on it now, and it has had no problems whatsoever. I just do my routine maintenance and it keeps going every time I need it. It is like any Toyota: not exciting in any way, but it does the job without any problems.

2nd time around

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

2nd Generation 4-Runner owner. This one is an upgrade over 2000 model. More interior room, stronger engine with better mileage. Have had 3 problems. Dead battery, bad oxygen sensor and dead radio (after warranty period)-expensive fix. Other than that it's been a great vehicle that shows very little signs of wear with no interior noises after 72K. Average 19mph in mixed driving.

Very versatile

Vehicle: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 4A)

Excellent reliability and versatility. This car is a great daily commuter but can also haul and off-road with zero problems. No mechanical issues after 80,000 miles.
