I have a 2003 Toyota 4Runner which has had a rotten egg smell coming from the back since the day I bought it. I took it back and asked if there was a problem with the catalytic converter. They said no. It smells to this day. I've been waiting for a recall.
2003 Toyota Sequoia 4X4 Is there a way to override the TRACS and VSC system? I was heading up a muddy slope and it felt like the rev limiter kicked in and I couldn’t power up the rest of the way – it felt like it was trying to get traction and slowing the revs of the motor to do so. Am I able to flash my ECU, pull a fuse, ... Read More
I'm dealing with a similar issue. 2003 4-Runner. Check Engine, Trac Off and VSC lights came on while I'd driving down the interstate. I get the vehicle into the local Toyota dealer who charge me $300.00 and to replace the MAF Sensor. Less than 24 hours later these lights come on again! Dealer wants an additional $ 378.00 Air Flow Sensor. I'm totally frustrated!!!!

If you must really have a 4Runner, then go for it. For that kind of money, I'd be looking at an Acura MDX w/tech (the best NAV in any vehicle) lease unless you plan on keeping the vehicle for many years. Like many here, I've often engaged 4H when needed. It's always worked although it doesn't engage immediately as most electronic systems are slower to engage. I just wouldn't use it full-time unless there was at least the potential for some slippage. On ... Read More
My credentials before you question them. I've been driving 4x4's since 1976. If it is binding you are ruining the 4wd. I have the 2003 model with the AWD option. It never binds. On the previous post, which model did you see, the SR5, trail, or limited? I bought a 2003 4Runner the first month it was out. The only non maintenance repair in 143,000 miles was an air conditioner relay switch. The first one was defective and Toyota had redesigned it to eliminate the defect. I'm planning on buying the new 4Runner as soon as it comes out.
I've seen this body style in the Philippines. It's much better looking than my 2003 4Runner.
In times when auto manufacturing survival is based on fuel efficiency, one would presume that companies would offer their more fuel efficient and high power engines in a lower price category... I'd guess fuel efficiency is why Toyota is bringing back a 4-cylinder offering. It would also allow them to position an entry-level model, making the base 4Runner more affordable. I'd agree that R&D is a significant cost to a car ... Read More
1996 is the 3rd Gen of 4Runners, with a MAJOR redesign! It looks similar, but has an all-new body shell and chassis - instead of the truck it used to be, it shares a chassis with the Land Cruiser. I agree on this one - rotors are notorious for warping easily on the 4Runner. When you brake and they heat up, get water on them, there is rapid cooling in one area of the rotor than others. I concur with tradscott. Even my 2003 4Runner V6 4x4 doesn't engage right away. Sometimes it was taking up to a quarter mile to engage. Of course you're usually stuck by then. Now I just leave it (because I can) in AWD 'unlocked' all the time. I found by doing this it will engage to other 4wd modes right away with no delay. You may not have this option, so don't ... What I meant is that Toyota will not likely offer the incentives on the 2006 V8 because they will have adjusted their production schedule so that they won't have excess inventory, especially early in the production year. So if you want the incentives, buy the 2005. If the new features seem to be worth it, then go for the 06. I just wanted to advocate the V6, if not to you, ... Read More
A recent quote of yours: "4Runners are about as bulletproof as a tin can. While they have enjoyed above average reliability ratings in the past that has slipped in recent years. The new 4Runners have been plagued with problems, many of which have been difficult to resolve. These have not just been for the new 2003 model year, the same issues have carried over for 2004 and 2005. The way Toyota ... Read More
"Any car or suv, whether it be Toyota, Ford, Chevy or Dodge, will smell like rotten eggs if you floor it". I've owned a lot of new vehicles over the years and have never had this issue. I have owned Grand Cherokee's, Ford Explorer's, Chevy Trailblazer's, Honda Accord's and many more. Floored them all as I drive aggressively at times. Was looking to buy a 2005 or 2006 Grand Cherokee and ... Read More
It can give an hint to look at the Toyota.jp web site and find your way to the Hilux Surf vehicle. Headlights have changed a bit Over fenders are now round.... The back has change a bit but not much.. Maybe it is because it is the japanese version of the vehicle but these changes seems to give the 4Runner a softer look. As much as I did not like the ... In 11/01 I bought a new, '02, V8, 4WD Explorer XLT. (This was shortly after 9/11, and I decided to buy an "American" SUV in a patriotic effort to help stimulate our economy.) Everything went well until shortly after the 36,000 mile mark (hmmm..?), after which the transmission developed problems. (Fortunately, I was wise enough to have purchased Ford's 100,000 mile extended warranty.) Following my 36,000 mile honeymoon with my new ... Read More
I also traded by 2003 V8 4r for a 2005V8. Though the smell can still occur, with all windows, vents closed, it is a lot less, and not too severe. I have 9000 km on the truck. They obviously made some changes to the catalytic converter, but have not solved it completely. Problem was diagnosed long ago to be with the location of the exhaust at the back and the proximity ... Towing at or owner limit is never recommendened unless you have a very short distance ie 2 miles. I have a 2003 4runner sport and tow about 5000 lbs out of my 55oo lb limit with out an equialization hitch. I can tow higher with one of those hitches(the kind that bolts on to the trailer). We tow live weight(horses) which is harder but a good test of a vehicles ability. The ... Read More
I am right now battling it out with my local dealer over this. they are trying to tell me this is normal. baloney! HAC is supposed to apply the brakes and that is all. Grinding noises and clattering and rolling back is not part of the game. I have a 2003 4Runner SE, V6, 4spd Auto. I have had it in to Toyota 9 times in 2 years for weird transmission ... Read More
Well, I brought in my 2003 4Runner and the problem was a small drip coming from between the rubber sunroof gasket and the roof. My Toyota dealer basically said that this is to be expected and that there are channels to collect the water. As long as the volume of water doesn't overflow out of the channels, there isn't a problem. Is this true? I gotta live with a slight leak? ... Read More
We woke up yesterday (Sunday) morning to firemen putting out a fire under the hood of our 1995 Toyota 4runner. The neighbor who called 911 said it sounded like the 4Runner was trying to start itself. We had it parked at a park-n-ride for a week (no foul play suspected), I drove it home 8 miles and parked it on Friday and had not driven it since. It started raining on ... Read More
Charlie4runner: Your problem in traffic is not the brake, but the driveline binding up at the slip yoke. I have had 3 4runners so far, the latest 05, and they all do it. Feels like rear ended by someone. The driveline has to be lubricated continuously and toyota is supposed to do this at every oil change ( they told me they do it even if not asked). Poor design of ... Read More
Okay, I have read many of the responses and it seems that the nay sayers are the ones that have never experienced what you are talking about, just too much time on their hands and respond just to be negative. I have a 2003 4Runner Limited and experience the smell almost daily. They apparently have never been exposed, because if they had ever experienced it, they would sing a different tune. ... Read More
The receiver issue was posted numerous times on this forum til about 6/2004. The receiver design was eventually changed, but early 2003 models had the issue. I bought my 4Runner with a manufacture date supposedly using the redesigned receiver, but mine had the old design. Needless to say, I have the same issue, so I always have my converted ball mount in the vehicle. You'll need to have someone cut about ... Read More
I've had three windshield repairs on my 2003 4Runner. I still have the original glass and 14,000 miles in 1-1/2 years of ownership. This Toyota windshield is fragile, and I would look forward to an aftermarket replacement. It might be worth letting the next 'hit' turn into a new windshield, except I'd have to cough up a $250 deductible for my share. The repairs are free on my insurance, but replacement ... Read More
I presently have my 2003 4Runner V8 Limited in for the second time in less then a year for Air suspension problems. In both cases the air suspension stays in the fully inflated position. They replaced the compressor the first time in, and this time they tell me it’s the air drain portion of the compressor. Which means their replacing the compressor again. You mentioned a recall, would you let me ... Read More
Hi everyone. I bought a 2004 Lexus Gx470 last year but sold it due to my job changing and didn't want the high payments. Currently, I am looking at two 20034runner LTD's. The first one has 47,500 miles, but has Nav and Multi CD. This one is in VIN number range regarding TSB for the sulphur smell, so I could have the cat's changed if I smelled the obnoxious gas (like ... Read More
Ok you smart mechanics, try this one. Ref a 2003 4runner sr5 .. 55000 miles. A dealer has had this suv for a month and cannot find the problem. Symptoms are that it runs fine up to about 30/40 mph, then if you press on the gas, even slightly, the engine falters. Idles fine, will rev up as far as you like as long as it is standing still. It is ... Read More
For what its worth, I Purchased a 2004 4Runner limited with V6 engine for $34,792.00 in October. This vehicle was used by the owner. I also have been studying this vehicle since the 2003 models and from this forum and Edmunds, I learned a ... Read More
"I believe Toyota and Lexus have gone to a high traction multi-mode drive system that does not lock the center differential unless the transfer case is shifted into low range." You can lock the center diff on the 2003 4Runner but hitting a button. That also disengages the spin control. You can do this in 4 low or 4 high. I assume this is true for all 4th generation 4Runners.
Wanna hear more? One of my Toyota dealer's service advisors recently told me that he had further investigated my moon roof wind-deflector question by calling Toyota "directly" at "1-800-GO-TOYOTA". According to this service advisor, the Toyota America representative he spoke with had no knowledge or information to indicate that the moon roof on newer (2003 and onward) 4Runners has an automatically adjusting wind deflector. I was even encouraged to call 1-800-GO-TOYOTA ... Read More
