Review of the 2001 Toyota 4Runner

  • A likeable SUV that reminds you, for better or for worse, of its truck-based origins.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power hatch glass.

  • Cons

Hard to climb in and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

  • What's New for 2001

Base models have been dropped, leaving Limited and SR5 trim levels equipped with a standard automatic transmission, Vehicle Skid Control (VSC), traction control and ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and BrakeAssist. All 4Runners have power door locks this year, as well as a prewired trailer hitch harness, a modified grille design and freshened taillights. New wheels for Limited and Sport debut, and a new premium 3-in-1 audio system with a CD changer is available. Revised sun visors with extensions and a HomeLink programmable transmitter come standard on Limited and can be ordered on SR5. Limited also gets a new color of wood trim, and standard front seat heaters. There's bad news for hard-core off-roaders -- the optional differential lock has been discontinued with the demise of the manual transmission. Three new colors replace two old ones on the color chart.

Used 4runner review

Vehicle: 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD 4dr SUV (3.4L 6cyl 4A)

In the years I have owned it, it has run perfectly. The only parts that have failed have been the 2 oxygen sensors which were expensive to repair. There was one recall in which they replaced front end parts. Gas mileage is consistently at 20 mpg in mixed driving. It has a slightly rough ride which is characteristic of light pickup trucks.

I love my 4-runner

Vehicle: 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD 4dr SUV (3.4L 6cyl 4A)

This has been my 3rd 4-Runner, and the best of the best. I have over 70,000 miles on it and have found nothing wrong. It gets used off road a fair amount and it still as tight as if it were new. One thing I have found about 4-Runners, they are very sensitive to kind of off road tires and vibrations caused by some tread designs.

I want to keep it

My 2001 4Runner now has 113,000 - unbelievable! It runs great and still in love. Have only had to replace tires and other routine maintenance.

Why change a good thing

Vehicle: 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD 4dr SUV (3.4L 6cyl 4A)

I had always admired this vehicle, but it was always out of my price range. Finally I got the chance to actually own one and I love it even more now. It has more options than I even knew it had. The anit-skid is great. This is my second Toyota and it is even better than the first. The wheels flares, hood scoop, and colored bumpers are great. Better then the new ones with gray plastic sides.

Truck based suv

Vehicle: 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD 4dr SUV (3.4L 6cyl 4A)

I have had only the best experience with my 4Runner. The only negative thing I can think of is the windshield fluid spray back. Whenever I have to use large amounts of windshield fluid to clean off dead bugs or mud, the fluid flows back underneath the mirror and onto the driver's side window . This causes reduced visibility of the mirror.

Dealer

I love my 4 runner. The dealer has ignorant sales people that are only interested in making money. They do not care about what happens after the sale.I was thinking about buying a new 4 runner and I was told specifically what do you think you can buy a new vehicle every six months. I was planning to trade because the color is dark green and is hard to keep clean.
