Review of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

  • A likeable SUV that reminds you, for better or for worse, of its truck-based origins.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Great crash-test scores, roomy interior, truck-tough underpinnings, power-down hatch glass, standard VSC with traction control, brake assist system.

  • Cons

Hard to climb in and out of, dated dashboard design, weak V6 engine, truck-like ride quality and handling.

Optional color-coordinated fender flares are available on the SR5. An AM/FM/cassette/CD is now available on base models, and is standard on SR5 and Limited models. Daytime running lights are now included with the antilock brake package.

My 4x4 sr5 4runner is

by on
Vehicle: 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Bought it used in 2007 with 130000 miles at a used car lot. Now has 18xxxx miles. Still runs strong. As long as you do the regular maintenance. This 4runner will run forever. The cloth interior is still great as I put a cushion on driver seat, a dash cover keeps the dash from cracking. The blue paint still shines as it is always garaged. Only used 4WD once in a muddy situation. The only drawback is the engine is kind of weak in this day and age IMO.

Great off-road vehicle

Vehicle: 1999 Toyota 4Runner

The 1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 (with automatic transmission) is simply the best stock SUV I have seen for off-road use. It is so light that it tends to skim across the surface of mud with the 4x4 engaged, rather than sinking like a Tahoe. It is narrow, so it can make it through skinny trails. It has high ground clearance and skid plates on key components, so it less likely to get damaged. It has a relatively short wheel base (which combined with the high ground clearance and removing the running boards) means it is unlikely to get high centered anywhere, unlike a Suburban. Any it is still very reliable after 115,000 miles.

Taken for granted

I bought my 4runner in 05 with 130k miles on it and didn't blink, now i have 245k miles and have only put a starter on it(are you kidding me). This is the best toyota yet and i have owned 5 toyota's and currently drive a Echo for the gas mileage and it has 190k on it and still running strong. I think about other vehicals but always stay with ol 4runner because it has always been there for me and i look to break the 300k with this truck.

Best all around

Vehicle: 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I have 240,0000 mi. On my 4runner. I replaced a few parts but saved money by doing my own repairs. Plenty of room inside for my gear and just enough power to tow my boat. Does well in the snow doesn't in the mud. Drive it hard and use it for commuting. Motor still runs smooth w/no oil leaks. I always loved the look of this generation.

Built to last

Vehicle: 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I love this truck, and with 187,000 miles on it, I have never had a problem with it. If the routine maintenance is kept up, these things will last forever. After all these years, it still looks great, and puts the newer body style to shame. Interior has held up extremely well, and all the electronics still work perfectly. The engine is still strong, for the period it was built, and the transmission still shifts like it was brand new! Great, great vehicle. I just wish it was a little bigger in the front seating area, but I am 6'5", so it just wasn't built for 90% sized people.

Bulletproof

Vehicle: 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Bought 7 years ago with 118k from a wholesaler. It now has 172k and still drives almost as good as new. Had to replace air conditioner at about 150k mi. for $1,000. The power antenna stopped working ($150 fix). The paint is very good, cloth interior is very durable, never any leak of any kind, I paid $9,500 for it 7 years ago and it's still worth $6-7k. Are you kidding me? When I detail it - it literally looks brand new. Decent gas mileage for an SUV, 17 hwy. Still got at least another 100k left in it. Best SUV ever built.
