OK so the 3rd generation 4Runner is my favorite generation and I like leather seats in it. What I DON'T like is the power antenna. Now say I was getting a 4Runner from the factory. Was it possible back then to get a 3rd generation (1996–2002) 4Runner WITH leather interior but WITHOUT the stupid power antenna or is it a packaged deal?
In case you didn't get an answer, here are my findings; 2003 4Runner and 2005 Tacoma or later 16x7 wheels backspace at 135 mm is different and portrude inwards about half inch giving it a less robust stance, and that is not what the 4Runner is all about. The correct factory original 16" x 7" oem styled steel wheel for 1996-2002 Toyota 4runner is part# 42601 35740 at your local Toyota ... Read More
224,000 miles is terrific.. Have you considerd having your injectors cleaned, or even checked for bad ones? With that kind of mileage I would also the consider the Fuel Filter and pump. Even having the Fuel lines blown out and clean. With 224,000 miles you make me proud and secure in owning a 4Runner V-6. I don't know how often you tune your car, but I would also consider a complete ... Read More
I think you misunderstood the guy's post. He was pointing out that the 3rd Gen 4Runner was a much better off road vehicle than the 4th gen or the new one. If you really want to go offroad, why buy a 2010 4Runner when it is so compromised in offroad capability compared to the older ones? Find a good older unit to beat up, and buy an Avalon for comfort. My Toyota has 210000 miles, in need of help to figure out whats going on. The gears are taking longer to engage, and feel slugish when I am doing 50-60 miles per hour as if the RPMs are going over 3500. I also hear a "clicking sound" when idle at 20 miles per hr. My mechanic could not pin point the problem, and chnged the oil & filter with out solving ... Read More
1996 is the 3rd Gen of 4Runners, with a MAJOR redesign! It looks similar, but has an all-new body shell and chassis - instead of the truck it used to be, it shares a chassis with the Land Cruiser. There are interior changes and a new engine, too, which they put in all the the Tacomas at the same time. My first 4Runner was a 1998, then I fell under the ... Read More
My Toyota 4runner 1999 check engine light (CEL) came on five years ago. I paid the dealer $1122.00 to fix it after a few weeks it came back on for a few minutes and disappeared. The dealer told me to bring the car back when the light is on… it came on after a year and the dealer wanted to charge me another $1000. They wanted me to believe if I ... Read More
I have a 1996 Toyota 4Runner Limited. I had it on a trip requiring 4WD in Mexico and had some difficulties and confusion getting into and out of 4WD. I put the car in park and found the 4WD shifter to go in and out of 4WD smoothly some times but not others. When I reached a paved road to go home I shifted the shifter out of 4WD but I ... Read More
Mark, I have two 4runners that are currently out of service. They both went out within two weeks of one another. The older of the two, an '87 with over 200,000 miles is available. If you are interested, let me know. For now, the plan is to fix the head of the 1996 and run it for as long as possible. The '87 has been mine for the past 10 years ... Read More
Does anyone know if a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 5sp Transmission will work on a 1996 Toyota 4runner 2.7L 4 cylinder...
At 196K there are no guarantees, but Toyotas are pretty solid up to and past this mark generally speaking, and this particular model and engine series has a very good track record. Personally, I would pass if there is evidence it has been used for towing, otherwise I would go for it. Try and get maintenance records - they will tell you a lot at that mileage. Good luck! :-)
Howdy, Can you please answer a question for me? I am considering buying a well maintained '96 4Runner with 196,000 miles on it(original motor and tranny). Should I be hesitant about buying such a high mileage Toyota? Thanks. Dash1
Hi Dan, We aren't set up for buying and selling in the forum - try eBay or craigslist.com. Or just ask your local salvage yard to do a search for you.
Hi, I'm looking for a 1996 Toyota 4runner or newer that has serious engine problems or is missing the engine. I want to put a different kind of engine in it and want to start from scratch, but don't want (can't afford) to buy a 4runner with a good engine and then through it out. Gracias! dan

I looked at my belts yesterday on my 1996 Toyota 4runner ltd. and one of them is badly worn. How hard are those to change and should I be able to do that myself or is that a job for a shop?
All four corners of my son's 1996 4Runner look alike. I thought that Toyota had addressed their horrible rust problems a long time ago. This vehicle has spent it's life in Alaska. I don't consider that an excuse. If they had a rust through warranty as good as other manufacturers, he would get a new body for his rust bucket.
I own a 1996 Toyota 4runner and would like to start doing my own lube jobs at home. Could someone please tell me how many grease serks there are and where they are located. Also, what kind of grease and grease gun to use. Thank you, Jim
I have owned 3 Toyota 4Runners, First a 1986 with the fiberglass top, which I rolled (from sliding on Ice)it over on way to work in 1990. The roof stayed intact. The Roll bar worked very well too, the vehicle had 80,000 miles on it. Then went out and bought a 1990 4Runner, the best 4 runner ever made. The New 4 door & V6 made it a great vehicle. The ... I have had three 4Runners. My first one was a 1993 (loved it, a 1996 (hated it), and a 2000 (pretty happy with it.) My complaint is that on both the 1996 and the 2000, my automatic antenna quits working! I hear the motor and the clicking, but the mast stops wherever it is at and that's it! QUITS! Is this a manufacturer's defect? Are they only good for so many ... Read More
Howdy all, I've been planning on buying a '04' 4Runner within the next couple of months. However I have noticed the lack of head and leg room in the new model. I'm 6'1" tall and approx. 200lbs. I think I'm about average height for this area (maybe a little on the tall/big side) but shouldn't the redesigned 4Runner have more headroom & legroom? In order for me to get comfortable I ... Lots of talk here about the V6 versus V8 and I thought I would throw in my 2 cents (since most people are giving the V8 advice, I thought I would go for the other side of the coin). Are we reaching a turning point here, even before it hits the lots?! Like you, I've been reading here and waiting a long time - since DECEMBER 1999! :> Man, back then people were screamin' about when this new Runner would debut. engine? This calculus becomes even more difficult when considering: 1) the great prices on 2002s versus paying at or $1,000 above MSRP for the 2003; 2) the declining availability of 2002s and the delay in 2003 SR5s until January of next year (at the earliest); 3) the benefit of owning a tried and proven 7th year edition of the 3rd Gen. run versus first year 2003; and 4) the resale and ... I had owned an '87 4Runner- then in 1996 "upgraded" to a '95. They both treated me very well. Then, with only 74K miles, the heads blew(not to mention the new tires at I bought at 60K and the famous Yota crunch sound on a sharp turn coming on strong at 70K. Shucks, I will really miss my tailgate. The Cruiser is the only Toyota SUV with a tailgate. I'm considering purchasing a 1996 4runner for my 16 year old daughter. I am leaning that way due to good reliability, good crash test results from the IIHS, and heavy weight. However, I'm concerned about the higher than average rating for death rates. That's a measure of the likelihood of a driver being killed or seriously injured once a crash has occurred, and is derived from actual on the road data. ... Read More

In 1990 the second generation came out with a 2.4 liter, 116 HP and 140 ft/lbs torque. In 1996 the third generation came out with a 2.7 liter, 150 HP, 177 ft/lbs torque. Both models can tow 3,500 pounds. Toyota still makes the 2.7 liter for other countries. And if you read the last few posts, no one really knows when the fourth generation 4Runner is coming out. :)
