Our 1998 Outback served us well so we went for the 2014.
The test drive was a 3700 mi trip to southern Baja & back.
It performed well, including on some pretty rough
desert roads. It's not a luxury car, not a sports car, but so far it seems to
be a solid mid-range car suited to a wide range of uses and conditions.
The 2014 has more interior space than our older Outback, which helps a lot on longer trips with luggage, camping gear, etc.
The radio has an analog dial as well as the scan feature.
This makes it a lot easier to find stations in unfamiliar areas.
I thought analog had disappeared and I totally hate the digital-only interface in most cares.
The stock alarm sounds only if a door is forced.
The "upgrade" that supposedly reacts to break-ins doesn't work, as you can climb all over the car without setting it off.
There is no way to lock anything to the roof rails: thieves can easily break the crossbars & take whatever is attached.
The 1998 held a full-sized spare tire, but the 2014 holds only the donut -- worthless for trips to the -- duh -- outback!
The rear seats do not fold flat; this restricts use of the space.
The stupid mileage gauge shows that mpg is higher going downhill than uphill
-- who knew? Why not something useful e.g. a temp or oil pressure gauge?
