I also own a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback which I couldn't be happier with its reliability and handling in the northeast winters. I purchased a new 2007 for my wife for Valentine's Day and she loves it. I splurged for every option available including the remote starter and 72 month 100,000 mile warranty and only paid a little more than invoice.
Where do I start? Heated leather seats, remote starter, 6-CD changer, all safety features with 2 young children. Sportshift Manual Control, dual climate control. Also the insurance company's high scores for low Injury, collision and theft.
I see no room for improvements. I do request some other option like making the navigation system an option on the Limited version, headrest DVD Entertainment Systems, deep tinted windows for the rear.
