I am with the others disappointed with their Subarus, and no, I do not feel I have high or unreasonable standards for the car. To begin with Subaru owners pay good money for their cars. Oh, jeez. Just noticed that you posted ten days ago. You probably had the engine out and back in by now! Apologies....
Well, it is a bit tricky, especially because the engine mounts have studs, meaning that "removing the bolts" actually entails removing the nuts from the studs (which are affixed to the mounts that are in turn bolted to the engine block). That means the studs stay on the engine, so the engine must be lifted both up and forward to remove. Here's how I did it with mine, twice: First, place ... Read More

Well, no, it is not difficult to do it, but it does take a lot of labor to get to the point of being able to remove the old one and then get the new one in. I have 2000 Forester and the inner boot failed. I am getting knocking after driving 40 miles or so. I ordered an axle for $75 over the internet. What should I look out for when changing the axle out?
Cool. This was the front axle on the 626, which is FWD and had that V6 crammed in transversely, with the tranny under it. A crowded mess, basically.
Yeah you can slip-on a boot for like $20 or so, the problem is that once it's torn the CV joint is actually shot because the grease becomes contaminated. It also may have been a more difficult job on the mazda. On the subies you loosen a few bolts on the suspension and it slips right out. -mike
Mine was just the boot, too! They said they had to take it off to rebuild it. Later Pat told me there are kits where you can do the fix without removing the axle. It was the wife's car and I usually work mostly on my cars.
Juice, he is talking just the rubber boot, not the whole CV. CVs for the subies cost like $75 which includes the boots, joints, axle, etc... -mike
That's funny because I was going to say the opposite - we had a boot tear on our Mazda 626 and it ended up costing a small fortune, something like $600 IIRC. The Mazda dealer was always overpriced so to be honest I'm glad we ditched that car. I don't think $200 is that bad, I'd have been thrilled to pay 1/3rd of what my wife paid for her Mazda. To ... That is a little premature, and $200 to replace just the boot is crazy. The whole axle and CVs cost about $60-70 for the parts and takes about 1.5-2hrs of labor. Never replace just the boot because once the boot is torn dirt has entered and contaminated the cv joint. -mike
It was the interior boots. Get this, The car resided in sunny florida for it's first few years of life, no salt, hills or slush. It is in Maine now but it is yet to endure a winter. Cheers Conor
Which boot was it; was it the exterior boot (nearest the wheel) or the interior boot (nearest the transaxle)? I replaced both axles on my '96 outback due to boot failure (nearest the wheel) at around 130,000 miles and 8 years of age. Lifespan of those boots is highly dependent upon the conditions to which they are exposed (I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, so the winters are hard on them), but ... Read More

This has happened at least on 4 different occasions, including 3 times to my wife while accelerating on a freeway onramp. At other times, it doesn't always stall, but the engine shudders and bucks when starting from a standstill (e.g. ... Read More
Not sure what the tong refers to....no idea actually. If the dealer fixed it on the 2nd attempt, that's not too bad, actually. Lemon Laws usually call for 3 strikes for the same problem in the first year. Hopefully your friend will look back at this anomaly and laugh.
My friend bought a 2006 Outback 7 months ago but recently it has stalled on him while on the highway in rush hour traffic. Quite scary. Dealership and Subaru have not been helpful. I was wondering if anyone else has had such major problems. (Dis)-Service History: The first time, they said it was an ECM and replaced it. This was after they said they couldn't find the problem and my friend ... Read More
I bought a 2006 Outback L.L.Bean sedan and I am very pleased with it. No problems , the car just feels right. Had 3 Volvo's since 1957,all were great cars with no problems.Traded one for the Subaru and the 1990 740 is still in use with 168K. I highly recommend the H-6 Outback.
I have a 2006 Outback with 18,500 miles. The first 7,800 were driven by a Subaru employee (factory car). A week and a half ago in anticipation of an 800 mile round trip I checked all the car's fluids. All were fine with the exception of front differential. I added 1.3 quarts of mfg. specified gear oil. Arrived at destination with front end noise. Took the car to the nearest Subaru ... Read More
I have a '07 Tribeca and have the same problem with the rpm spiking to about 2500. It doesn't matter if its warm or cold like now. The problem actually began after I took it to the dealer in September for the first checkup. So then I took it to another dealer and they said its normal. Baloney. It never did it before that first service, so why now. Do you ... Read More
dsl, Sounds like a loopy sensor, but I wouldn't know which one, offhand. When it happens, have you tried goosing the throttle pedal? Sometimes, the change in fuel-air hitting the manifold will cause the system to re-evaluate the fuel-air mixture, and adjust itself. Gaucho
Tommy.....how did that work out for you? I am NOT a Subie Newbie, and carman has helped me in the past. Now my wife has had it with our '96 Acura RL, and wants a second subie. CarMan do you know the current #'s (money factor, incentives, etc) on the 2007 Outback 2.5i? I have tried to get into one in the past, but could never get a favorable lease. I ... Read More
Only 8.5k miles on the orig tires. I'd really like to try some Nokians on my OB. We've all read good things about the Nokians, but I'm not sure if I want the small compromise in normal dry driving. It's a smaller compromise given that they're all-seasons, but it's not what I'd want for my XT. I'd settle for good quality all-seasons that can handle some occasional bad conditions. From what ... Freestyle holds 7, Outback holds 5. Different class of vehicles. There are a lot of crossovers now that are pretty similar looking today, just like many 4dr sedans all look pretty similar. Actually though, the Freestyle doesn't look all that similar to the Outback: http://images.consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/autoreview/400x266/2006-subaru- -outback-06810061990006.jpg http://www.car-data.com/photos.30/p.ford.freestyle.30.1.jpg If anything, the Cadillac XRX looks a lot like the Freestyle: http://www.automotiveaddicts.com/magazine/images/2006cadillacsrx/2006CadillacSRX- PanRight01Fixed.jpg As does the Saturn Outlook: http://spanish.autoblog.com/images/2006/04/5aa3de4188cea12ebb5deb05ba4dce01.jpg
