I have a 2005 Subaru Outback LL Bean edition. Last week I started hearing a "clunk". It's not rhythmic and it went away as the car warmed up. It was a lot worse this morning. It seems to be coming from the base of the steering column or just under the dashboard on the driver's side. Any ideas?
I set my tires at +4 psi above Subaru specs. (On my 2000 Legacy that's 36F and 34R.) Any higher than that and I feel the rear end bounces around too much on bumpy roads. I've gone thru two sets of RE-92s and I'm on my second set of Conti Extreme Contacts and will probably go with a third set when these need replacing. I always get an alignment after new ... Read More
The headlight issue is not a problem, there is an oil that needs to be put on the stem of the headlight before installing and it stops that problem. It must be a bad connection issue and the oil helps the connection.
You need to talk with your dealer and Subaru if your dealer is ignorant. Subaru came out with a Technical Service Bulletin some time back on the rear tire wear issue. There are new settings for rear toe-in and tire pressure. See TSB 05-36-07R.
Hey I have a Subaru Outback 2005. I put the key into the ignition to start it but it turned over without any resistance (it's really loose) and did not start the motor. I put it out of gear then back into park and tried starting it. I tried starting it from every other gear and once again the key would turn over the display lights would all come on but ... Read More

What did you do? Is there an aux in on the inside if the factory system, so I can just buy a loner cord, or do I just pay to remove the whole cover and get a new head unit? I refuse to go through fm. Thanks
It is; I don't think Subaru has included weather band since the 2005 model year on the Legacy/Outback. I'm not sure when they phased it out for the Forester.
Hi--just saw this. My husband had a similar problem with his 2001 OB Ltd with the same mileage. Turned out he had a failing fuel pump, a bad O2 sensor, and a fried temperature sensor. He took it in 3 times for diagnosis, including to a dealer. No-one could replicate the problem for months. We took it back to our trusted independent guy, he kept it for a week, and finally ... Just seeing this post now. I hope you got it fixed. I had this happen to me back in Spring 09 whenever I came to a stop. Finally, it got to the point where the engine will die at stops. We get winter snow in the New Mexico mountains. There are days when you can't get near our house without AWD Over the last 18 years we have had five Subies and two Audi's. A few observations: 1. Historically, BOTH manufacturers delivered most of their cars with crap tires. I almost always ended up replacing the OEM tires with better summer or all season rubber. 2. We always have one car ... I can't remember exactly what caused the problem, but a significant number of Subaru Flat-4s suffered "catastrophic failure" on the 2001-2004 models! The 2005-present Flat-4 is rock solid reliable...the problem was definitely addressed and doesn't affect any models after 2004! Consumer Reports reliability ratings (based on data collected from owners) fully supports this- the 2001-2004 4-cyl Legacy/Outback are rated "Much Worse Than Average" in the 'Engine- Major' reliability category. The 2005-present ... Read More
One thing xwesx didn't mention was load carrying capacity. You do NOT want to go down - which is what usually happens when you put on tires with a smaller overall diameter. Going down in load carrying capcity increases the risk of a load related tire failure which sometimes has tragic results. In your case, 225/60R16's are currently the most poular tire size, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding suitable ... Read More

Hi there! I have had a similar problem a few times! I have noticed that the check engine light doesn't go on for me, though. It also never happens when I'm driving with a tank that is fuller than half full. Did you ever get it figured out? Would love any help or advice if you got some info from your mechanic. Thanks!
The trick with tire sizes is to know that the first number (225) is the section/tread width, and the second number (60) is the sidewall height as a ratio of the section width. So, 225*0.60 = 135mm. The second tire you listed is the same width, but the section height is 70%, or 225*.70 =157.5 mm. That's close to 7% larger (greater diameter) than the stock tire and it's going to ... Read More
Re the best tires for a 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon, I posted a question like this when we first bought out 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon about 3 + years ago. Today, I noticed that the shuddering happens when the defogger is on. Are you referring to the air conditioner or to the rear window heating element? A check engine light with increased electrical load suggests a bad ground or corroded battery connections. Have you cleaned the battery terminals?

Never owned a Subaru so have no experience with them in rough driving conditions. Would any of you guys skip buying an older Subaru that is in otherwise good shape because it doesn't have stability/traction control? Or is it less important on a car with AWD?
