Bought car used at 140k (as such this could reflect the previous owner's handling of it.)
Week 1: Head Gasket, Oxygen filter, timing belt, Radiator leak
Week 4: New Tires, New brakes, CV Joints, Bent Axis joint, oil leak
Current: Week 8: Headlight electrical system failure.
Paid: 4,500 for car.
Repair bill: 5000
I may have bought a bum car but I'm really not impressed with the outback--It's hardly been reliable or cost effective. Even as a temporary commuter car (I bicycle for most of my work) it's cost me a chunk of change.

From what I've experienced, unreliable
I paid $7345 with $4000 down for mine. It had 82,000 miles, clean interior, some dents on the door, and within the first week of ownership, I paid $2098 for repairs. Next month, we're looking at another $2000 to get the car running the way I want.
The car, despite having low miles and clean interior, had a lot of cheap aftermarket parts, probably a parent-owned car given to a child. The good news is, I'll keep the car til the engine kills over (which I think it has another 100k in it)
