My 2008 Subaru Legacy aux jack isn't working. After $100. diagnostic at dealer, I was told I need a new radio. No problem with radio so far. Is there any way the jack can be fixed or do I have to get a new $450. radio installed? Jack is in console. Thanks.

I have owned two Subaru Outbacks with the 4EAT that is in your car (one of which was also a 2008), and they were fairly smooth, so there is certainly nothing normal about the symptoms you describe. They USUALLY cover the stone thru windshield event (crack....they will try to have it "patched" and filled using the epoxy filler method(good for small chips) .......don't go for it with a crack!! Beyond that, it was 3.9% up to 60 or 72 months. I ended up buying a 2009 Legacy and financed through Subaru (JP Morgan Chase) for 4.9% for 72 months.

It's a very good price for the 2008, I think there may also be some good financing deals too. My wife's had the same model with LLBean equipment since last August. She's averaging about 24+ with combined highway/city. I recently bought an '08 Legacy Limited and I'm at about 21.6 combined. I've only had mine for about 1,000 miles. The long drive will make a difference. I took a trip up to Connecticut to see friends and I averaged 25.8 in the Legacy for that stretch.

I have read my manual and looked around forums. I am getting mixed information on when to do my first oil change. Some say after 3000miles, while others say after 1000miles. So i'm writing this post to see what you subaru owners are doing and which alternative do you guys recommend? One more thing: is synthetic oil recommended on the first oil change?

And to add a bit more to the conversation... Every new Subaru but Forester now has an engine immobilizer. The new 2009 Forester that comes out in a couple months will have this as well. As far as I know, every Subie w/immobilizer has the blinking message. My '06 Outback & '06 Legacy do.

The boxer engine is a noisier engine in general, but it should not sound... harsh. In sub-zero temperatures, the engine on my 08 Outback only exhibits the extra start-up noise for 15-60 seconds, depending on temperatures. The most notable noises when it is extremely cold (about -20 and lower) are belt and accessory complaints. Assuming you have about $800 in fees (plus taxes) rolled into the monthly payments, and are not putting any money down for cap cost reduction, it all seems to add up. Have you looked at the Limited edition as opposed the the Special Edition? It has an upgraded interior, but I'm not sure if it has the options you've added to the Spec. That sounds like a great price on the car (which is on my short list at the moment as well), but you've left out a bit of information. Are you putting any money down? Are taxes and/or other fees (bank fee, for example) rolled into the lease? I also assume that the residual of 69% is for 12k miles, and 10k miles is a bit higher. That price is as low as we've seen here, so I'd definitely go for it! I'd don't see any reason for worry about the dealership going out of business as long as you've got somewhere to have it serviced. You may see if they have another dealer they're referring their service dept. business to. Fantastic price!

I ended up buying a 2008 Legacy Limited w/ vdc (see post # 535) for $21,500 + $254 doc. fee + 7% RI sales tax. This price includes the $1,000 rebate. I purchased the car from Patrick Subaru in Shrewsbury, MA.

Yes, that price is very, very good. You may be able to get $100-$200 more off (maybe not), but there's no way they can drop another $2000 to include any taxes & fees at that price. Subarus are very reliable (Consumer Reports rates them at #2, behind Honda only), so I think you're less likely to come across unexpected repairs. Your price is good, but there may be up to $1000 more wiggle room. For example, Fitzmall in MD lists a mid-range Legacy for nearly $2000 below invoice, including the rebate, so they've got nearly $1000 in some type of factory-to-dealer incentives to get to that price.
