I set my tires at +4 psi above Subaru specs. (On my 2000 Legacy that's 36F and 34R.) Any higher than that and I feel the rear end bounces around too much on bumpy roads. I've gone thru two sets of RE-92s and I'm on my second set of Conti Extreme Contacts and will probably go with a third set when these need replacing. I always get an alignment after new ... Read More
You need to talk with your dealer and Subaru if your dealer is ignorant. Subaru came out with a Technical Service Bulletin some time back on the rear tire wear issue. There are new settings for rear toe-in and tire pressure. See TSB 05-36-07R.
What did you do? Is there an aux in on the inside if the factory system, so I can just buy a loner cord, or do I just pay to remove the whole cover and get a new head unit? I refuse to go through fm. Thanks
It is; I don't think Subaru has included weather band since the 2005 model year on the Legacy/Outback. I'm not sure when they phased it out for the Forester.
Hi all, I have a 2005 Legacy i with the extended Gold Plus Warranty and was hoping to piggyback on this forum post. I recently heard squealing from the Driver's side front wheels when driving along. We get winter snow in the New Mexico mountains. There are days when you can't get near our house without AWD Over the last 18 years we have had five Subies and two Audi's. A few observations: 1. I can't remember exactly what caused the problem, but a significant number of Subaru Flat-4s suffered "catastrophic failure" on the 2001-2004 models! The 2005-present Flat-4 is rock solid reliable...the problem was definitely addressed and doesn't affect any models after 2004! Consumer Reports reliability ratings (based on data collected from owners) fully supports this- the 2001-2004 4-cyl Legacy/Outback are rated "Much Worse Than Average" in the 'Engine- Major' reliability category. Last year, I purchased a 2005 Subaru Legacy with fewer than 30k miles on it. Anyhow, I recently realized that my back two tires are worn to the point of needing to be replaced; the two in the front are fine. One thing xwesx didn't mention was load carrying capacity. You do NOT want to go down - which is what usually happens when you put on tires with a smaller overall diameter. Going down in load carrying capcity increases the risk of a load related tire failure which sometimes has tragic results. In your case, 225/60R16's are currently the most poular tire size, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding suitable ... Read More
Thank you so much for your help. It was quite comprehensive and I appreciate you taking the time. We are looking now!
Thank you so much for your help! I will definately check into it now. It is time!
The trick with tire sizes is to know that the first number (225) is the section/tread width, and the second number (60) is the sidewall height as a ratio of the section width. So, 225*0.60 = 135mm. The second tire you listed is the same width, but the section height is 70%, or 225*.70 =157.5 mm. That's close to 7% larger (greater diameter) than the stock tire and it's going to ... Read More
Re the best tires for a 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon, I posted a question like this when we first bought out 2005 Subaru Outback Wagon about 3 + years ago. Everyone calls themselves premium. Heck, Suzuki pitches the Kizashi as a luxury performance sedan. Seriously. It doesn't even offer a V6 or a turbo. Subaru's true upscale march came in 2005-2006 and failed miserably (look at Tribeca sales). Everyone balked at the prices. Sales really took off in 2009 when the Forester arrived with value pricing (and a little de-contenting to be honest).
That said, the lightness of steering is the one thing about my 2010 Forester that I do not love, but I do tolerate it. It stands in stark contrast to previous Subaru vehicles, which always had very well-balanced steering. Wes If you were my age, you'd appreciate the lighter touch. :) The return-to-center action when releasing the wheel is nice in city driving; neither my Legacy or 2005 Outback 3.0R had ... Read More

Your point is well taken. Again, this is all personal opinion, obviously. Recently I noticed two things: - Every once in while the ... Read More
The Outback/Legacy head gasket problem appears to be far more widespread than Subaru is willing to admit. My former 2003 Outback needed a gasket replacement at 28K miles. She had Subaru approved coolant from the start, therefore, it was not a coolant problem as Subaru often states. Even after a gasket was replaced, I could hear a sound of gushing coolant upon engine start-up. Obviously, the new gasket was also leaking ... Read More
from the day we purchased our wagon, the doors randomly lock on their own, sometimes leaving keys inside or even in the ignition. subaru service turned the lock-out prevention from on to off but the problem has continued. anyone else have this problem or a solution? thanks.
Hey - I have a 2005 Legacy 2.5i. It has been to the dealer whom I bought it from three times to no avail, and the fourth time to a different Subaru dealer worked...the rattle was from a broken clip in the drivers side vent. But it was amazing how three trips to a Subaru dealership, and they couldn't find it - each time making up a new "yeah, we got ... Read More
Thanks, kdshapiro, I thought that was a really interesting video. A few notes. For touting the many advantages of Subaru products, the organization would do well to extend VDC to the entire line of Legacy/OB products. In Consumer Reports test of the 2.5GT-L, they noted a tendency for excessive tailwag (oversteer) in advoidance manuvers. I can attest to this as my father, who exited a highway off-ramp on the Garden State ... Read More
Hey folks, on my 2005 Legacy 2.5i, the OEM tires are pretty crappy Bridgestone Potenza RE92's...anyone have any suggestions for the best replacement for someone in New England that is looking for a sweet all-season? I know the Yokohama AVID is nice, and Toyo Proxes TPT is swell, as well, anyone mind throwing their two cents in? Thanks! I'm convinced there's no such thing. We now use dedicated snows, even on ... Perhaps this is it... With most Subarus with automatic transmission, there is no button to push in order to release the gear switch. (Normally, you push in the button, then move the handle to the desired gear- park, reverse, neutral, etc.) The clicking noise you hear is the release/lock for the gear box. So, if you're in drive and going 20mph, you can't hit the handle to put the car in ... Read More
I'm looking at a brand new 2005 legacy GT that never sold off the lot. The dealer will make me a deal at $27k. When I run a KBB report the suggested retail is ~21k. I have to run the car as used of course so I'm not getting a clear picture. What do the fine people of this form think? KBB Search ====================== Engine: 4-Cyl. 2.5L Turbo Transmission: Automatic Drivetrain: ... Read More
From the 2005 Legacy/Outback service manual, section/page PM-8, the torque spec is 33 ft-lb (44 N-m in metric). Of all the cars I've had, this is one of the easiest for oil & filter change. By the way, I find it very odd that a Subaru service advisor wouldn't know this. An afterthought: If you want, I can email the oil service pages (.pdf) to you; just make your email visible. ... It's not a waste at all, gluz. I'm happy to help. If you were to lease a 2006 Subaru Legacy Limited GT Wagon through its captive finance company right now for 36 months with 12,000 miles per year, its buy rate lease money factor and residual value should be .00200 and 49%, respectively. When negotiating your lease on this car, keep in mind that Subaru is providing its dealers with up ... Read More
Thanks, unfortunately it does not look like it will work on a Forrester. Here is clip from first post in the above referenced sticky post from the creator of the mod: Will this work on other Subaru's? YES. This will work on WRX/Impreza/Outback Sports. As far as I know, it will not work in Bajas, Forester or Tribeca's. It will not work for any years but 2005 & 2006. This mod ... Read More
Keep in mind the Legacy made the IIHS Gold Top 10 list, something not a single Volvo managed to do. The Legacy is quite safe. I'm not saying the Volvo isn't, but this certainly is not a disadvantage for the Subaru: http://www.iihs.org/news/2005/iihs_news_120405.pdf Below is a pic of a Forester and a Volvo that hit head-on, the Subaru actually fared a bit better, but both passenger compartments were completely intact. The Subaru ... Read More
My 2005 Legacy GT Limited sedan is now 13 months old and has 25k on the odometer. The only problems to date include a burnt out headlamp at 18k, and the poorly designed Automatic Climate Control. I did find that the ACC worked flawlessly all winter long. Once I set the temp on AUTO, it seemed to maintain a constant temperature. However, starting my second summer with the A/C is another ...
