Re: Subaru brand overall reliability? [ludergirl]
I have to say that I have always been a fan of Subaru and the concept of equipping all their middles with all wheel drive. I too have always driven Toyotas and Hondas for their track record of reliability and I too have been tempted by the Subaru allure until recently Here is the story: My girlfriend purchased a 2004 Subaru Legacy 2 years ago. At 80k the entire engine ... Read More...
Re: Turbo [paisan]
Mike: Your comment about the banjo bolt screen being removed on later models is precisely why I am now a frustrated Subaru owner. I have owned my car since July 2004 (Legacy GT Auto Wagon). I was an early adopter of the redesign and had purchased two prior Subarus, and several more through extended family. I change the oil religiously; never over 3500 miles and check ... Read More...
Subaru Outback/Legacy Buying Advice

The new head gaskets came as a running change in MY2002. So a late 2002 model should be OK. 2003 and later also, of course. The VDC model was the H6 so it has more power (212hp vs. 165hp) and stability/traction control. I'm sure it will cost more and premium fuel is recommended for the H6. 2005 the new model arrived. For those the prices will be higher, of course. A 2003-2004 ... Read More...
Subaru Legacy/OutbackTransmission Problems
Re: 2004 manual trans. Legacy Outback [jeh6]
I have a 99 with manual and had similar issues. Replaced both front shafts. Finally figured out with subaru support that the center differential was bad. Read More...

Re: Starting issues with 97 Subaru Legacy outback [zyu]
Hahahaha, now how is that for some confusion?! I actually wrote my question in response to a different poster (calimari). But, your problem does sound similar. My 1996 Outback used to have startup issues similar to these. For four years, actually. It was quite troubling at first, but once I figured out the triggers and the resolution, I could live with it. Let ... Read More...
Subaru Legacy/Outback "Check Engine" Light Problems
Re: CEL Horrors - 2002 Outback Base Wagon [georgejung]
On the 2005 models, you need to have an OBDII scanner that is CAN compliant. Most manufacturers switched to CAN around 2004, if I recall correctly. I am sure Mike (paisan) can clarify this. I find Haynes manuals very helpful for maintenance, even very in-depth maintenance, but I am not sure if one is available for a Subaru as new as 2005. Looking on Amazon, there ... Read More...
check engine light
If you are reading this message, you probably know what this is all about. You have gone through multiple 'check engine' light episodes, have replaced multiple oxygen sensors, and are on your third or fourth catalytic converter. I had a 2004 Legacy wagon with 80,000 mi, and my friend (still) has a 2004 Outback. We both have had the same experiences, so these problems ... Read More...
Mazda6 vs Subaru Legacy and Outback
Re: Mazda6 vs Subaru Legacy and Outback [misha1641]
I had a 1999 Subaru Forester. We sold it because we didn't like the gas mileage, the back seats were torture for us (we are tall), and the local dealer service was awful. I then bought a Mazda6 wagon (2004) which I loved except for the atrocious gas mileage -- between 18-20 mpg around town. You are right. There are not too many choices. We sold the Mazda, and then bought ... Read More...
Re: Uncomfortable driver's seat--Legacy Wagon [bbinsb]
I am VERY picky, and I love my '07 Legacy seats. The GT seats look similar, but are different. If you have a GT, replace with regular Legacy seat(different side bolsters). If you have a 2.5i, an upholstry shop is your best bet, and I would do the leather- entire car for about $1,000. You won't sweat or grip. The 2000-2004 Legacy/Outback seats are the worst in Subaru ... Read More...

Re: Chip munk [ateixeira]
didn't catch mine in the act ... Did finally fix the misfire cyl. #2 after more dancin' Tried a coil pack switch (put a 2004 imprezza pack on the 2000 legacy). Improved response even though not the exact part number (last number different -- probably a better -hotter? -- coil pack) MIL still on & again set cyl. #2 misfire code & the car didn't idle well. Replaced injector ... Read More...
