A car to love!
Vehicle
2004 Subaru Legacy L 35th Anniversary Edition AWD 4dr Wagon (2.5L 4cyl 5M)
Review
After owning a 98 Legacy, my wife and I wouldn't settle for anything other than another Subaru wagon. We're roadtrippers and campers and when we're not mapping new territories, we love the sense of safety and very smooth ride of our 35th Anniversary Legacy (2004), with the double sunroof and fully reclinable seats being just as sweet in the city as it is useful in the sticks.
Favorite Features
All wheel drive, double sunroof (the rear being fully retractable), automatic everything with cruise control, substantial couchy seats (the back seat in not thin and flimsy), good control and power for a 4-cyl, solid stable drive, and keeps its sturdiness at high speed.
Suggested Improvements
In subsequent models/years, I hear the lack in power has been address with more hp and less weight, but the 2004 still has a noticable gap in desired power if you're used to shuttle launches.

Some fit and finish problems notably the weather stripping coming loose. Also had to replace sunroof because of wind noise, all done by dealer with no hassle. Otherwise very dependable. Only expense has been gas, tires and brakes. No repairs.

2004 Subaru Legacy L 35th Anniversary Edition AWD 4dr Wagon (2.5L 4cyl 5M)
Review
This is an all around wonderful vehicle. Everyday performance is good but in rain or snow, good quickly changes to great. Nothing I've ever driven has compared to this car. I can't see any reason why I wouldn't buy Subaru in the future.
Favorite Features
The AWD is incredible. Such an advantage over the FWDs I have driven in the past. Snow and ice were no problem.
Suggested Improvements
MPG, I average 21 under normal circumstances. Passenger side window whistles in high speeds. Fold down back seats would be nice.

Review
Very well build car. Exceptional on snowy/slushy roads. Great road drivability. Bought just several months ago but love it so far. Not too keen with the outdated design though.
Favorite Features
Superb road handling in winter conditions thanks to AWD as well as low center of gravity. I love it!
Suggested Improvements
Very outdated exterior and not too shocking interior. Interior paneling (i.e. side walls in trunk area) needs to be improved; panels very cheap and way too delicate; some misalignment of interior parts. If changing design please do not over do it. No need to remind of XXI century!

I've had nothing but trouble with my '04 Outback once it hit 50,000 miles. I will never buy one again and I've owned two others.

Go back to the 97-99 model type.

Love Everything but Performance
Vehicle
2004 Subaru Legacy L 35th Anniversary Edition AWD 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 5M)
Review
The doggy transmission hampers the performance to the degree it's a safety hazard. The H6 has lots of power when you finally get into it, but laggard transmission delays throttle response as bad as waiting for an old school turbo to spool up. That one feature has sucked all the pleasure out of driving what could be an awesome vehicle. I've owned SUV's and pure 4x4's. I love the surefootedness of the AWD in all conditions, the comfort and smoothness of the ride. I drive in an area with lots of aggressive drivers and very heavy traffic. The weak transmission makes me feel unsafe.
Favorite Features
The AWD makes this the most stable, sure-footed vehicle I've ever ridden in.
Suggested Improvements
TRANSMISSION ... dogs down the whole car.

I drive 80 mi a day to the City (elev. 4500 ft) from a a peaceful mountain valley (elev. 6500 ft). Have been doing so for 11 years in my '93 Legacy L AWD Sedan. It now has 290,000 miles and still going strong! I have since retired it to the teenager daughter. Enter my new Subaru. Looking forward to another 10+ years of confident all- weather driving without guzzling gas. Whole family loves Subaru's. Dad, Mom and both brothers own one. And now I own two!
Favorite Features
BMW 3 Series styling, great 35th Anniversary Features package. It's a GT without the leather seats! More power than old Subie, smoother ride and handling. Great fit and finish. Easy to repair/maintain. Amazing on snowy/slick roads.
Suggested Improvements
Cruise control drops down a gear when doing incremental speed increase. Doesn't shift down when expected. Has always needed variable intermitent windshield wipers! Fog/Driving lights should stay "on" on high beam.
Best ride & handling combo

Review
I leased a 2000 Legacy GT ( 5 speed ) for four years. All wheel drive with the rear differential proved quite fun when powering out of corners. But that brings up the week point of this car. Not enough power to go with the great suppension tuning and bank vault structual rigidity. Best combination of ride and handling of any car I've driven. Quiet interior and very comfortable seats.
Favorite Features
Ride & handling, seats.
Suggested Improvements
Gripes would include poor performance from the stock Bridgetone tires, expensive required routine service at dealership and no one touch open & close feature on sun roof. I wished I had waited two more years for the WRX.

legacy 35th manual wagon
Vehicle
2004 Subaru Legacy L 35th Anniversary Edition AWD 4dr Wagon (2.5L 4cyl 5M)
Review
counter the counterspin- The power on this car, especially low down and especially in the 5-speed, is terrific. I am more than happy with the engines response, from in town to highway trips, and I like to keep the SPORT in driving. The handleing on these cars is telepathic. They grip from all four corners, stay flat and remain predictable. The braking gets some complaints, but I hve seen no issues in the first 6K. Interior is handsome, seats fit well after break- in, I recommend lifting them slightly up off their lower setting, and tilting the seat relatively far back to give it a more roomy feel.
Favorite Features
The white Subaru wagon looks BMW esque with a few coats of wax sitting in my drive. The 35th ann. model has a clean and classic appeal not matched by the unreliable trendy dogs from VW's stables (stale). So- take a test drive and be open to your emotions.
Suggested Improvements
Telescoping steering wheel would put it over the top.
