2000 Subaru Legacy L 4dr Sedan AWD

Review

I bought this vehicle new in summer of 2000. It has proven to be a very well made and reliable car. The only glitch has been an engine knock sensor that malfunctioned at 70,000 miles and had to be replaced. This repair cost less than $125. Otherwise, I replaced the tires and performed scheduled maintenance. Feels like a sports car to drive! Goes great in snow and ice with all weather, siped tires, but this Sedan has lower ground clearance than the Outback, so 8" or more of snow can be difficult.

Best Features

Reliability but fun to drive!

Worst Features

Wish it had higher ground clearance like the Outback. I would have purchased an Outback, but was tired of driving wagons.

2000 Subaru Legacy L 4dr Sedan AWD

Review

Hello, we have a Legacy L wagon bought new. It is still the original clutch! 80% is city driving. Comfort is bad, but I like this car. Super great on the snow, 160 hp is plenty, just have to use the shifter. We replaced: an injector, timing belt (maintenance) relay switch for fuel pump and torsion bar that broke on a dirt road. This is an incredible reliability record. However we will not buy another one because of not so good fuel mileage. My daughter will learn to drive with this car.

Best Features

Engine. This is a car that required a little driving skill.

Worst Features

Better seats, please!

2000 Subaru Legacy L 4dr Sedan AWD

Review

Pretty sluggish vehicle, but handles well with the AWD, and will go anywhere. Have had numerous problems with the suspension and brake systems. Can’t complain about mileage (25 avg) since it is all-time AWD.

Best Features

AWD is the only reason I bought this car, and it lives up to its reputation.

Worst Features

I would like to see more power, and some of the recurring problems fixed; built better (brakes).

2000 Subaru Legacy L 4dr Sedan AWD

Review

With a 5speed and taut handling it is
very fun to drive. Fuel economy is
decent considering ALL FOUR WHEELS are
being driven ALL THE TIME. This is
what pushes Subarus to the head of the
pack in Alaska, and accounts for their
well-deserved ubiquity. Standard ABS
(unlike Honda and Toyota), another
Alaskan-friendly feature that
dramatically improves stopping
performance on ice. Typically
unassailable Japanese reliabiliy round
out the package. AWD costs $10K more
from VW/Audi, plus their reliability
is the pits and you have to let the
tranny shift for you (on the Passat
4motion)! I think not!

Best Features

Traction, classic unpretentious looks, reliability, superlative crash test scores, standard ABS, available manual transmission.

Worst Features

I have only one complaint with the sedan: the entire back seat should fold down, instead of just one middle "pass-through" section. Having the armrest is nice, but it limits your cargo capacity compared to the competition. Abviously this flaw is not present in the Legacy wagon.

2000 Subaru Legacy L 4dr Sedan AWD

Review

Good car, better priced than some; the
Legacy upgrade in 2000 was
excellent...a far better car than the
1999. Better engine appreciated, as
it's still a bit underpowered, but
zippy enough in sedan form. Interior
exponentially better; gas
mileage not good at all for this size
car...I've never come close to
their 'estimates.' AWD works great in
snow, as touted, super all-weather
car...in warm climates, a different car
is probably better, just for the gas
mileage alone. A ruggedly handsome
car, does everything well...very
versatile. Legacy sedan peppier and
slicker than the Forester, but you give
up some
cargo room.

Best Features

AWD of course; 2000 interior much improved; engine decent; good handling capabilities; decent price.

Worst Features

Better stock tires, better auto transmission (needs some gear ratio help); not the build quality of other imports in this class. Gas mileage too close to SUV status.
