Have owned now for almost 2 years, and still am impressed by what a sound, competent SUV this is. Through 2 winters now, tracks like a goat-no way to get it stuck, and rain is irrelevant due to great visibility, wipers and traction. Body quality is high also-survived a nine inch wide, 12 foot long tree branch falling on it and grape sized hail without a dent or scratch. Plenty roomy (I'm 6'4" and comfortable front or back) and practical (carried everything I ever asked it to, much more than CR-V or RAV). Turbo makes it a VERY competent performer, and I think the handling is a great compromise between comfort and performance. Critics need to keep in mind that this is a Subaru, not an Audi

The Fun Mobile is dead, the Adventure Wagon lives

After retiring my beloved 1998 Impreza to project car status, I needed a new daily driver. I travel about 50% for work, so a big car payment just didn’t make sense. The 2009 Forester was redesigned to be more SUV than wagon, and is all the better for it. With the turbocharged boxer, it is as quick as you want it to be, but with gentler driving, does quite well on gas mileage. Driver’s seat is incredibly comfortable, and the first car I’ve driven in a while that I don’t HAVE to get out and stretch after driving 90 minutes. Back seat is comfortable and has TONS of room. Headroom for even the tallest folks, and a sizable cargo area. Lots of comfort, but nimble and a ton of fun to drive. Subaru owners become very loyal, very quickly. I’ve driven a lot of winters in 4x4 trucks and SUVs, and Subarus are the head of the pack, hands down.

Only 300 miles, but here are first impressions. Would rather have V6 than turbo due to premium gas. Arm rest are very low on left side, unsecure on right side. Would love better seat adjustments. Move panic button from back of key to front, I always seem to hit it when I'm unlocking the hatch. It is fun to drive. Road noise is pretty loud at hwy speed. Love the room! Much better than others After test driving almost everything, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, MBenz Mclass, Acura, this was the best choice. The Acura has more comfortable seats and armrest for tall people like me, but cost $15K more. Just couldn't justify.

i've had my used 09 Forester XT (~57k miles) for about 2 months now. Took it cross country (+10k miles) completely loaded inside, on top with car top carrier and behind with hitch carriage. Gas mileage so-so (23-24 mpg). my previous car's 6 cyl engine did better with gas, but had nothing on this Forester when it comes to needing a little get-up-and-go on highway and in mountains. 2 problems: front head rest and noise. Turned front head rest around to reduce neck fatigue. Noise - my dog used to be an awesome road tripper, until we got this car. She is unable to relax as long as the car is in motion. It's so bad, i'm considering selling just for her well-being.
