Scion xA History
I have a 2006 xA with 94,000 miles. For the first 15k, I utilized the 3 free changes by the dealer. Since then I have used the best Amsoil full synthetic and their filter and changed every 25K. Not one drop of oil has been consumed to date. One minor repair (around$200) covered by extended warranty. 34 mpg overall since purchase (I have complete records). Not too bad overall.

Well we're never going to agree on this issue. I hardly think GM is an American company anymore, they do business and have offices all over the globe. Anyway- yes the new AVEO sedan was an inhouse design in Korea at GMDAT with PACTA involved (GM of China), and Australian's Holden division also involved in design and engineering. GMDAT headquarters are in South Korea and GMDAT is responsible for all the design and engineering of b-class GM cars including the AVEO.

You may not, but GM still has a 75% domestic content overall in the USA according to recent reports-Detroit News and autob--g, and your foreign import Toyota company is 49% domestic content overall in the USA. General Motors started here in America, and their main headquarters is in Detroit, just like your Toyota's main headquarters is in Japan.

Sorry but I don't agree with you when you call GM an American company. They have divisions all around the world and design centres in Asia and Europe as well as USA. GM is an internationally run corporation and not a company. The new AVEO is not American in any shape or form. GM is not an American owned company - it's an international company with brands Holden, Daewoo, Opel, Vauxhall GMDAT, PACAT and others. Profit will go back to all of GM not just GM of USA with the majority of the profits going back to GMDAT in Korea and PACAT in China.

So any Aveo sold is more money for them. Any Aveo sold in the U.S. makes GM and the dealer more $$$. Why would they sell it if there wasn't going to be a profit?

Buying a 2006 or 2007 Aveo doesn't support an American company at all. The AVEO is a GMDAT product produced in Korea and sold in over 140 countries around the world. GM is a world-wide automotive company with PACAT (GM China), Holden (GM Australia), Opel/Vauxhall (GM of Europe) all involved in the development of the new '07 Aveo. I went to www.ask.com and typed in "Scion Xa repair problems" and found references on www.tundrasolutions.com to TSB's for the leaking problem (evaporative drain hose?) and the "pulling to the side" problem. That is rather unusual nowadays. Most of the SCION dealers try to stay at sticker in any case. If the 2007's are out you may want to look at those. I bought an automatic 2006 Scion Xa last fall; it has around 3500 miles on it. It's "supposed" to get 31/38 mpg. Not So New Owner!
I'm a not so new owner (I think!). I brought my 2006 Scion xA in September and have been having fun ever since. The only thing that is a bummer is the horrible traffic in the DC Metro Area but late night driving is something I always look forward to. I plan to mod my car appearance-wise soon enough :)

As a result, if you were to lease one through Toyota Financial Services you would have to use its standard lease program. what's cool is that I like the flexibility of either vehicle and I know the present 2006 and 2007 Scion xA gets great gas mileage. about the Scion xA. Apparently Scion will stop making the xA for 2007 and come out with a brand new design for 2008 that will be out in the spring of 2007. Seems like the only persistent "complaint" of sorts with the xA is that for some people the AC doesn't cool down fast enough on a really hot day. Mine's pretty good but you do have to use the MAX FAN setting, which is loud. Once you've driven 10-15 minutes I can cut down to #2 setting on the highway and #3 setting on city streets. The Mexican parts thing is just that, Mexican as far as I know. Those who build in Canada are considered U.S. built and it has been that way for decades. The Aveo has 6% domestic content similar to the Nissan and Toyota's sub-compacts.

I suspect that the parts in NAFTA vehicles move over both borders in both directions. The Aveo is thoroughly Korean (I think, I haven't checked the Moroney labels lately).

You are right! My mistake! But I was told Chevy redesigned some of the "bad" features of the Daewoos. The bottom line is I was going to buy on reputation - Toyota (Scion) - and was glad I took it on a long test drive before deciding. Thanks for your reply too!! That really surprises me that you found the Aveo to be a better ride then the Scion. However, the Scion we test drove was pretty loaded with all the extra lowering, strut kit, and sway bar which I am sure made a difference compared to a basic model Scion. Both cars are top-drawer..
the xA I have test drove but not the Yaris sedan. It is basically aesthetics that would have me place the Yaris sedan slightly above the Scion xA for "gotta have-itis." The 2007 Scion xA has been rumoured to be the same as the 2007 Toyota Yaris 5-door liftback. That, especially but not limited to the Scion xA RS 3.0, will be a rig I have to see and test drive! ... 2006 scion and synthetic oil
love my new scion xa car . i was thinking about using synthetic oil but when i talked to the dealer he felt if i change my oil regular they thought it would be adequate.the toyota dealer thought synthetic oil would be a waste of money . i will change it every 3,ooo miles ,i want to do the best thing for the car . does anyone have an opion?

I have driven the Scion xA
for 2006 and I was impressed by it. It is definitely a car to buy for "fun factor". I suspect the 2007 Toyota Yaris hatch and even the sedan will be the same. The amazing thing is, I am getting the same mpg on my new 2006 Cobalt! (I had a Scion xA about 4 cars ago, for 12,000 miles, and easily and steadily hit 35 mpg, a little lower.) I presume we both have manual transmissions and spend a lot of time on the freeway, little time on city streets....

I take mine to the Petaluma dealership (or did before 15K quote). My first 2 checkups there for 5K and 10K were about $50 each with oil coupons that came with purchase. $160 seems steep. Thanks for the reassurance. I have a Toyota pickup with 150K with no prob yet except a clutch replacement, so I'm hoping for same quality.

Hey micweb, We have had my wife's new 2006 Scion xA for a few days now and I really like driving it. It is a total blast to rip around in...I mean drive in (*cough, cough). We bought my daughter a 2004 Scion xA with an automatic transmission. We live in Houston and during the summers experience between mid 90s to over 100 degree temps. Her AC has performed just fine. I read an article in Consumer Reports that stated that the Scion 2004 xA's have had issues with the AC however we have yet to experience that. In fact we pick up a new 2006 xA ... Read More

$300 is a rip. Should have been about $160, even from a dealer. That's what they charge for the 5K in San Francisco. The warranty rap is giving them some wiggle room. Basically Scion would have to prove that the outside service you got caused a mechanical failure....like if your oil filter fell off in the middle of the highway or they put your brakes on backwards....

for months I finally test drove a 5-speed Polar White 2006 Scion xA yesterday! I like it! It has the audio upgrade, including being iPod ready and it has foglights. When I was told by dealership my 15K service on xA was going to be $300, I went to my regular mechanic who did the warranty service required for MUCH less and he caught something I feel should have been found at the 5K rotation--a nail causing a slow leak. The manual is confusing, but I've heard that as long as I get the service done, the warranty is in effect. ... Read More

It depends on how much the extended warranty costs and money you have to spend. I've never purchased an extended warranty on any new car, and I've driven them over 140K miles each - one 210K miles - without anything serious going wrong. the Scion xa is just the kind of car America needs right now. I have one on my futures list right now along with either a Kia Rio LX sedan or a Kia Rio5. Great gas mileage and fun to drive. and test drove a 2006 Polar White Scion xA with a manual transmission. The price was $14,195, before tax and license. It did include some extras, like fog lights and i-Pod and Sirius-ready radio, etc. I was impressed with the car in the test drive and wouldn't rule out a possible purchase later. I recently went to a Toyota dealership and test-drove the new 2006 Scion xA, AUTO. Without any extra options which I believe there are enough standard options to satisfy, the price turned out to be around 15,000 plus taxes and such. I was very surprised to find out that the scion's slogan is No Negotiations () . Hope this is a general price for other Toyota/Scion dealerships around.

I purchased a Scion XA on August 8 and experienced an immediate intermittent problem. While the car drives great and is a blast to scoot around town in, the shifter sticks and the car will not go into gear. The Scion sells well because it is priced close to selling price - actually there are no discounts available. This worked for Saturn until people figured out you could by the equivalent vehicle from Chevy with a big discount. The Scion isn't really inexpensive, it's just that other brands, such as the Honda Civic, are priced high to allow discounting and overallowing on trades.
