Dynamics

RATING

The 3.6L V6 is as powerful, smooth and efficient as anything from overseas. Saturn's +/- toggle on the shifter allows driver-access to all 6 gears in the automatic (unlike other Ford or GM products with the same transmission). Steering is a little light but appropriate for the audience who'd consider the Outlook. Overall handling is better than you'd expect from a 4,700-pound crossover with three-row seating. A 4,500-pound tow rating is above average for this class.

Comfort

RATING

Excellent ride with minimal floatiness while it envelopes shock and coarseness. Interior volume is evident in head- and legroom for 1st and 2nd rows -- a little less so for the 3rd row which offers 33 inches of legroom. Bonus points awarded for simple access to the 3rd row with the 2nd row tilting, sliding, and tumbling out of the way with the pull of one lever. Large side doors are good for entry/exit, but may be inconvenient in tight parking stalls.

Function

RATING

With xenon headlamps, the usual halogens are sufficient and offer a decent amount of light and pattern. Considering the size and scale of the three-row Outlook, the A-, C-, and D-pillars are rather thick, but the large side mirrors and optional parking sensor help with visibility. Audio and HVAC controls are a mishmash of Playskool-large, and fussy miniature buttons. Functionally, the entire center console could use a redesign. Interior storage is also an exercise in compromise with smaller-than-expected storage compartments in various locations. At 117 cubic feet, the Outlook's total cargo volume is gi-nor-mous.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The Outlook is a good interpretation of the "not-SUV and not-minivan" trend but still comes off mostly as a new SUV. It's attractive and not trying to be something it is not. The interior design and materials choices show an awareness of the way things "ought to be," and it's largely successful. Build quality is very good, and for a vehicle of this size with all its multiadjustable seating, it is remarkable how tight and rattle/squeak-free the Outlook is.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Family Friendly Three rows of seating are standard, and unlike other crossovers, access to a reasonably comfortable third row is simple. Second row comes in either bench or twin captain's chairs for more flexibility.

Comfortable With a willing drivetrain and comfortable ride, the Outlook is as comfortable going to the store as it is to the mountains for the weekend.

Cargo Hauler Cargo volume ranges from 19.2 cubic feet with all three rows occupied to 117 cubic feet with the 2nd and 3rd rows folded flat. You may wish to opt for the twin-bucket 2nd row (rather than the 60/40 split bench) that allows access to the rear cargo area without needing to reach over the bench seat.
