Saturn starts only 50% of the time
My 2005 Saturn Ion is not reliable when it comes to starting. Basically, it's like a 50/50 chance that I'll be able to drive somewhere. I had my battery replaced and my starter replaced a week ago. Keys stuck in ignition? Although I am not a mechanic or knowledgable as to how ignition switches work these days, since the advent of locking stearing wheels, all vehicles I have owned have had that issue when force on the steering column is applied to it due to residual pressure from the tires applying pressure back to the steering column. 2005 Saturn Ion
Finally replaced the ignition switch at home, did the anti-theft re-learn process... without any major expense! . Not had a no-start problem since. Hope that's the end of it because I been dealing with the no-start problem the past 3 years... worse in cold weather. Very frustrating! Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for all the input from other owners & techs... NO THANKS TO GM!

My 2005 Saturn Ion, Manual transmission, with Cruise had the Inital startup anti-theft problem also, 6 times. I also had to wait 10 to 20 minutes for it to reset. Another woman in my area had the Ignition switch replaced to remedy her issues with this same problem. For your sake, I hope this is a permanent fix and solves your problems once and for all time! But I do not trust the dealers and mechanics. The first thing they're taught is to lie, sell unnecessary parts, blame someone or something else and steal your money with an outrageous "diagnostics fee". An old friend of my daughter's who is an ace mechanic put the starter in which both the dealership and the mechanic said I needed. One thing for sure - It is NOT a battery problem - Many owners have been taken by dealers and service centers. Furthermore, it is NOT a problem caused by the climate. The power steering stopped working, the speedometer stopped working (it remains at 0 regardless of my speed), also the odometer doesn't seem to work either - my mileage does not increment when I drive. We encounterd this specific problem in 2007 on one of our dozen plus ION's, less and one thousand miles out of warranty but still within 36 months. You have a thankless job, Maam. This POS ignition switch was a known defective part in 2002 when the ION first came out. GM has compounded the problem by using the same junk in the Cobalt, HHR, G5, Pursuit, Colorado and Canyon. My own experience : Bought the 05 ION 1 brand new. 2005 Ion that won't start consistently
My problem is that it won't start. I may have to turn the key 5, 10, 50 times before anything happens under the hood. With the key turned, I have full electrical function inside the car, but no click or turn over of the engine. Eventually it starts - usually. Thanks. They replaced the entire shift thing, had to order from L.A. Oh yes, I am aware the ION's first model year was 2003, but the first models for sale were available in fall 2002 as 2003 models. As far as the key not turning off is most likely caused by a bad micro switch at the base of the shifter.Its a wired set the mirco switch gear indicator light and the shift lock solenoid really comm on problem on that car.I cant belive they didnt check that out.Its esy to change you just remove the console and its right there.Also 2003 was the first year for the ion ... When I called them to schedule an appointment when it started again they said there were no recalls on anything and replacing the ignition switch was the "correct" fix. Saturn replaced my ignition switch when my car was only 6 mos old. Car started acting up the following winter, and every winter since. So, replacing the ignition switch isn't always the answer.

I called Saturn last week (there isnt one near my town) and he said re-programming, as well a local independant shop said reprogramming, but I have to take it to GM to get reprogrammed and they are saying ignition switch, but I'm not too confident with them. The answer is, yes and no .... Out of nearly a dozen ION's, yes I have several where the switch change worked, but at the same time I have two that it did not. I have been dealing with this issue also for a few years. GM is also saying ignition switch, but Saturn said the computer needs re-programming. DOnt know what to do as allready spent $500 + "fixing" this. Did the ignition switch replacment work for you?

I've been having this exact same issue with my 06 quad coupe, I took to the saturn dealership..and they told me it's my ignition switch.. so they are currently replacing it for $230.. and I just filed a complaint with the NHTSA. My Ion has been a great little car..but after this crap I'm ready to get rid of it. to bad I still owe more than it's worth.

Have 06' Ion quad coupe,same issue.Has not started the past 2 mornings.Often starts after the 10 minute wait.Not 4/11 and 4/12/11. The whole thing is b.s., and is going to cost about $700 to fix proper at the dealer with the $140 to diagnose. Dropping off today at f.h. daily san leandro. Bent out of shape about the whole thing already.

... look up how to disable the pass lock, there is even a video on how to do it, its effective and it works. takes no parts and 5 minutes

Yes, I have. They said I only needed a new battery which I authorized them to put in, and problem still exists. I also took it to independent mechanic and he couldn't find anything either.

Just start the car, cut the wire, tape it up and be done with it. Remove the airbag fuse first and then replace it once you're completed the procedure and turned the vehicle off.

I have a Saturn Ion 2004 2.2 L. will NOT start in cold (below 20 degrees F) and default to SERVICE on the panel. I have been told by a local auto electric shop that the contacts in the harness need to "see" a closed loop mode to start. I also cut the white wire about two years ago and have not had one problem staring since. I think it is remarkable that one smart Saturn owner in Kentucky came up with this solution and yet, judging by all the frustrating stories, all of the Saturn/GM engineers could not figure out the correct fix. We tried that for a while, but it's not the solution - it won't always work, trust me. We finally cut the white wire, and haven't had a single problem in almost 2 years.

I was recently having the same problem. This is how I was able to start my car: turn the key, but not all the way to where the car will start only to where the anti thieft light comes on, wait till it goes off then turn the key all the way to start the car. I have not had anymore problems with this anymore.

Turn your key to the "on" position, you're security light (the lock symbol) is probably blinking. If it is, leave on until the symbol stops blinking. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes. Once the symbol stops blinking, turn car off, wait about 30 seconds and try to start car. It should start. If it doesn't, turn off and wait a few more seconds, start and you should be good to go. ... Fools! How do they expect you to get the vehicle to the dealership if it won't start? You need to go into the trunk, disconnect the positive side of the battery cable to interrupt power to the passlock system.
