I have an 05 Malibu Maxx and my wife drives an 07 Optima. The Optima's platform is closer to the Elantra but it shares a power train with the Sonata. 1. The Optima has a quieter engine than the Maxx, however I like the 3.5 ohv v-6. Compared to Hyunkia, the Maxx has a far less expensive maintenance schedule due to its OLM. The Sonata 3.3 V6 and 2.4 4cylinder scored very well on the consumer reports test, plus the current sonata has been reconmended for two years, the Saturn Aura XR was given a score of 70, the Sonata V6 had of score of 76, the 4cylinder Sonata was 74, The 2007 Aura XE V6 had a score of 62. I just read the 2008 Saturn Aura XR is rated as you stated 17 City and 26 Highway" If there has been a change in the way the EPA tests cars for 08, I guess someone needs to come up with a conversion factor to compare 07 to 08 cars. I have a 2007 AURA XE. It has 2,990 miles on it. It is averaging less than 16MPG. Worst tank was 13.7. Best tank was 16.7. The 16.7 tank had quite a bit of HWY mileage. So, I went to my dealer. They asked me to bring it in so they could check it out. The computer says the AURA is working just fine. So, they suggested I call Saturn to complain about my poor mileage. I did that ... I bought a 2007 XR and received 2 rebates, a $1500 rebate and $1000 'conquest cash' since I traded in a non-GM vehicle, for a total of $2500 off. I bought the car in August and do not believe the conquest cash is available any longer, at least on the XR. I also don't think the 2008 Aura's have any rebates currently My original plan was to wait for the arrival of the 2008 ... Read More...

If you back some posts, it was from an article which was quoting GM as saying it was not effective. I do believe they increased the discounts a bit. The advertising increased, which helps. A 24% increase is a good thing. Of course the numbers are still too low. A 23.7% fleet sales for the first half of 2007 may be some indicator. Maybe they kicked in some extra fleet ... Read More...

noles200, thank you for your response. The dealer is Saturn of Brunswick, a DCH company. The price for 39 months that they offered is 269 (also with 1995 down pay). What dealer in central Jersey? I just bought in NJ too. If you want to contact me get me post your email address. Don't believe for a minute Saturn won't deal. I don't know how they are coming up with that payment based on the numbers you have above. I'm getting about $204 (before gap and tax of course but that doesn't equal $73 per month!)
