Tuned for European driving habits, the 2008 Saturn Astra is light and nimble with a solid feel. Clutch uptake and shift action are vague and imprecise. Four-cylinder 1.8-liter engine makes 138 horsepower but feels laggy and sounds coarse. Brakes are very effective with a firm pedal.
Wind and tire noise are the major complaints in this category -- around town they're acceptable, but on the freeway it's quite a bit more than the Astra's closest competitors. Front seats are comfortable, well bolstered and easily accessible. Rear-seat access is difficult and there is very little room. Tilt-telescoping wheel and good pedal placement make the driving position good for spirited driving or commuting.
The Astra's interior was never planned for the U.S. market and it shows. Buttons are poorly labeled and in unfamiliar layouts. The IP is large with high-contrast numbers. Fold-flat seats do an excellent job of improving maximum cargo space.
Interior layout may be awkward, but the materials are very good with attention paid to gaps and fitment. No squeaks, but some rattles over rough road.
Economical Transportation
The entry point for a 2008 Saturn Astra is $15,875 and that includes antilock brakes; front, side and head curtain airbags; power windows; cruise control; keyless entry; and Onstar.
Daily Commuter
Small, comfortable and relatively quiet make the Astra an ideal commuter car for long hauls or big-city drives.
Fuel Efficient
While the Aura trails Honda's Civic by 2 mpg across the board, and the Corolla by more than 4 mpg, an EPA rating of 24 city/32 highway is respectable.
