I'm considering purchasing a 2005 9-5 w/~24K miles. The asking price is ~$15k. I test drove it and liked it. It seems in pristine condition and for the year it has relatively low mileage. You can do your research to tell for sure but buying Saabs used is a great way to go - if they check out mechanically. Like you (now I've owned two used Saabs), when I bought my first used Saab I couldn't believe the value I got for the money. I payed $8500 for a 2000, (in 2005), and $6900 for a 1999 the next year, (totalled my first). The ride is comfortable, roomy, driving ... Read More...

The response you got from the dealer doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not a mechanic, but my understanding of how these systems work is that when a "check engine" light goes on, a trouble code is stored in the computer, which the dealer (or anyone else who knows how to do it, actually) ought to be able to access with his diagnostic equipment. My 2005 SAAB 9-5 wagon has been trouble from the beginning. The freeze plug blew, had to have a new engine. The belts all broke, had to be towed, and the fuse which powers the SID unit goes out ever six to eight weeks. My husband and I purchased a 2001 SAAB 9.5 new in Oct. 2001, drawn to the auto for it's safety rating. In Oct. 2005 I received a letter from SAAB informing me that the IDM was defective on the SAAB 9.5's. If the turbo was not the problem...we have a 2001 9.5 six cylinder..there was a recall on the IDM's in the 9.5, although SAAB has said it didn't relate to the 6 cylinder, both the IDM's in my 9.5 went out...one in Nov 2005 shortly after receiving the written notification that the IDM's were defective (SAAB paid for the replacement). I bought a used 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero in January 2005 from an independent mechanic with whom I have been doing business since 1991. The car was just off lease and had 35,000 miles. I own a 2005 9-5 sedan that I picked up used with very low miles this summer (13K). I had a 91 900T for about 12 years, and a great Saab mechanic. I was looking for a nice replacement vehicle and he warned me to absolutely stay away from the v-6 Opel derived turbo, he said it was an ancient design and incredibly hard to work on and significantly less reliable than the 4 cylinder ... I am planning to return my 2005 Saab 95 series 2.3 T lease ( two months early). I desire to lease a similar 2007 model. List price is $37,000. with a $34,000. selling price.
