Our Aero test car featured the 2.8L V6 turbo engine, good for 300 hp and 0-60 in 6 seconds. Unlike Saab Turbos of the past, the power delivery is linear. We struggled to come close to the fuel economy estimates and missed by large margin.
The Aero's adjustable dampers and intelligent AWD system are sophisticated and well sorted. In performance testing, our 9-5 Aero proved it has the agility of a comparable BMW sport sedan. Steering is friction-free, responsive and precise.
The adjustable dampers do a very good job with most surfaces, only getting flinty on choppy, potholed roads (what car doesn't?). Overall ride character is confident, compliant, and sporty, and rarely harsh.
On par with comparable sport sedans.
With the exception of the 'Night Panel' button where we'd expect to find an ignition button on the dash, much of the interior layout (and switch gear) resembles many current GM products. Adequate, logical, but nothing particlularly clever.
Despite what appears to be a high beltline and odd-shaped greenhouse, outward visiblilty is typical of a sedan with the exception of the large C-pillar. Lane-departure warning and reverse camera are available.
Seat Access & Space
This generation 9-5 offers generous interior proportions, front and rear. Our Aero's seats were very comfortable and very supportive (heated as well).
Cargo & Storage
The 9-5's trunk is large by almost any standard, plus the rear seats fold to expand cargo capacity.
Our test car's Diamond Silver paint was flawless and showed off the car's curves. We never heard a squeak or buzz or rattle, although there's still a gap beween this car's build quality and the best cars in this price range.
