I had always wanted a saab. I wasn't very smart in my purchase, as I bought a '99 SE conv. I have been driving 40 years, and this is the worse car. The previous owners let it go, and I felt sorry for them as they lost everything 2 years ago when stock market plunged. She took me for a "ride" because she knew I really wanted this car. I have ... I had a 2003 Saab 9-3 linear up until this February with the odometer reading in at about 90,000 miles. I purchased the car for $17k at the end of 2006 with 58,000 miles on the odometer. The car had the following problems: surfacing to knobs was rubbing off (by the time of purchase), passenger side vent broke, rear brakes replaced twice, front brakes replaced once, check engine light came on ... I have a 2003 9.3 Saab arc. I too had numerous problems, including the need to replace my transmission - $4,000. Luckily, I had purchased the extended warranty. Admittedly, the dealer has been very good at taking care of anything and everything that was needed at no cost. I too love this car, particularly the design of the dashboard. I'm afraid I am going to have to trade it in for ... Read More
That's a good price - I recently offered $20k plus my wife's 2003 Mercury Sable for a nicely equipped '08 Aero Sportcombi XWD. Salesman acted like I was $10k away; figured I was probably $4k low and he'd at least talk to me a bit. Nope, but he has my number and expect surely he'll call back.
We have a 2003 9-3 Linear (42k miles) which is really a fun car to drive (my wife particularly loves it). But I've almost had it with maintenance issues. Mechanically the car has performed almost flawlessly, but the lesser issues have begun to kill us. Here's what's gone wrong over the years: 1. 2003: TCS module went bad, replaced under warranty. 2. 2004 or 2005: many burned out headlight bulbs, followed ... Read More

Hi All, I have a problem with my 2003 Aero. One day she became trembling, shaking and giving diesel feeling from smooth running...during the cold days. Sometimes it goes away but most of the times remains. One of the SAAB mechanic told me to change the belt tensioner another said its normal. Well I don't really want to kill her risking not to change it. If you heard anything about it ... Read More

Another point is that GTI is newer model. For ... Read More
bons, I recently (2 wks ago) purchased a 2003 Convertible, drove it 500 miles from Pittsburgh when the engine blew up. Hi -- Thinking about purchasing my first Saab, 2006 9-3 with 25k files plus 3 1/2 years left on bumper-to-bumper warrantee. A lot of people refer to the 2006 2.0T model as the "Arc", as the Arc models of 2003-2005 had the same 2.0T 210 hp. engine, while the Linear had a smaller 2.0t (175 hp) engine... So the terms Arc and 2.0T can be used interchangeably. I'd offer $18,500, see where they counter, and settle on $19K, before taxes. A lot of the '07s and '08s are going at fire sale ... Read More

That year in particular had a number of electrical problems experienced by many owners, as this one did. Not all the problems always stay fixed, so there is risk involved in this purchase. The overlooked aspect of reliability ratings of cars is the fact that future reliability of current model year cars is largely based on the history of that model in the previous 3 to 4 model years. This presupposes the idea that the manufacturer has done nothing in the subsequent model years to address the problems which caused the reliability issue. This is particularly relevant in the case of the Saab 9-3.This model was ... "Conflicting" stories on reliability simply means that some people have a lot of problems, others don't. My experience with a 2003 9-3 matches the CR rating. Terrible. Electrical issues. Numerous (apparently irrepairable) squeeks and rattles. Window regulate went out. Various recalls. The WORST production stereo system in the market today (the Chevy Cavalier that I was given for a loaner had a much better sounding system. I leased a SAAB 9-5 before, and it was a great car. I attribute the difference to the fact that in ... Read More
Saabs reliability has inproved since 2003. The lesson is never buy the first year of a model that has major changes. 2003 was the first year of the 9-3 sedans and the end of the hatchbacks.
CR is correct. The 9-3 is a lemon. I have a 2003 Arc and I have (sadly) gotten to know my dealer's service department very well. Two new recalls just were issued and I live in fear of he next message I will see on the information display that ends in "...Contact your Saab dealer." Stay far away from the Saab.
I just completed my lease on a 2003 9-3. Did I enjoy the car? Yes, absolutely. I always felt good about driving it. However, it was also the most problem-prone car I have ever owned (see my posts on this board). Other vehicles I have owned, have for the most part, been Japanese, but there's been a few American cars and an Audi A4 in the mix too. You're going to ... Read More
Run away from the '05, especially since you are concerned with the initial depreciation. With the revised GM pricing philosophy, the 2006 2.0T is over $4,000 cheaper than a comparable 2005 Arc. I picked up my 2006 2.0T at the end of August with a purchase price of $24,396. I am leasing it for 24 months, 15K per year, for $312 + TTT with no money down (granted, I get the ... Read More
Hi: I have been having the same problem of unexplained stalling with my 2003 9.3 Arc for the two years that I have had it. The car has been tested and examined three different times by me dealer without detecting the problem. I have a case opened with Saab U.S.A. and I'm wondering why no one has mentioned that mine is not an isolated experience. Can you tell me where you ... Read More
I'm interested in a 9-3 (either an '05 holdover with the current discounts/incentives or an '06 hearing about the drop in base price) but can't seem to find any info on a scheduled year for model redesign. 2003 was the first year for the current model, correct? Sorry if these are "newbie" questions but I thought some of you long time Saab owners may have the inside info for me quicker ... Read More
You were wise to walk away from that (non) deal. Have you seen the pricing on the 2006's? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the base MSRP looks to be more than $4,000 cheaper. With a little bit of negotiating on a 2006, that more than makes up for the employee discount. Plus, you have better resale with a 2006 vs. a now year-old 2005 model. Yahoo autos shows the base ... Mine is 2003 9-3. keep on sharing the experience i had for the steering wheel manufunction problem. when I called for service, they said it's not a serious prolem, so i have to wait for a week for appointment. every time i drived the car, the problem info. will show up. But one thing I saw was interesting. seems like computer in the car scan through the whole system every couples ... Read More
Hello Hightide, You mentioned in your post that GM is expecting a lot out of Saab and that it can be used to one's advantage to correct problems. My wife's 2003 93 has an extreme hesitation problem which nearly terminates in a stall . The local Saab dealer and customer service have told me that the car is operating outside its design parameters (97 - centrigrade I assume) and cannot be ... Read More
I have had awful reliability with my 2003 93 Arc 6 speed. Was wondering if others have the same experience. I like the design, performance, etc., but have been disappointed. My prior experiences with Honda, Volkswagen (except for the 77 Rabbit!), Infiniti, and others shine in comparison to the Saab. Lots of problems with electronics and electrical system. The car has developed lots of rattles, too. Love the car - has ... Read More
I leased a 2003 9-3 Linear. Horrible stereo - I'm reduced to listening only to talk radio on AM, don't even listen to music for with this system it's like the proverbial fingernails on a chalkboard. Complained to SAAB soon after delivery. They politely said, in effect, "go pound sand." Since then numerous squeeks and rattles, and electrical glitches. It's painfully clear that GM has ratcheted SAAB quality way down to ... Read More
I brought my saab 9-3 on 11-15-2002. and i check its birthday actually was September that year. I actually find almost no problems at all. only very minor for the first two months with rear door luck. Even dealer couldn't find out what's the problem. It heals itself. what's a amazing car. and it actually went to two accident. I wrote my post very easely ago. So I did experience how ... Read More
Terrible car, forced to sell mine (2003 Linear) after only 18 months of ownership. Out of service, more often then in service. Buyers beware, unless you like visiting your dealership every other week.
I have had one of my remotes stop working (out of 4) and I thought it was the battery. Dealer reprogrammed it and it is fine. This was about a month ago. No other remote problems since then. I have a 2003 Arc. And for the record I got the dealer to program the "comfort close" feature which in my previous 2003 Arc they would not do, there is a ... Read More
2003 9-3 doesn't have Harmon Karden (unless maybe if it's a convertible - which was still the oild body style). The stereo in the 9-3SS has been identified as a weak spot, especially in the Linear model. The Arc & Vector/Aero are a little better. I have an arc and changed some speakers and added an amp with a line out converter. Music is important to me, too. :)
Hi friends this is my first message in this forum. Can any one compare bose audio in Mazda 6 to Harman Kardon in Linear and Arcs. Iam struggling to decide between fully loaded mazda 6 and used 2003 Saab 9.3.Also do we get 6cd changer in Saabs? Music is very important to me. The one existing in 2001 9.5 Aero seem to be just OK for me. Any input is greatly ... Read More
Sorry to hear about all the problems you've had. From personal experince and from what I've read on various Saab forums, I've learned one important thing: never buy a car in its first model year. It's good that you leased yours. You said you've had your car since 2002, so I'm assuming its a MY 2003? I've had my '05 Arc for a little over a month and things are going ... Read More
