Thanks for the response. I sold my Saab because it just became too unreliable. The latest problem was intermittent failure of the air conditioning fan. When it failed the first time a dealer replaced the fan 'resistor, his name for it'. It worked, then failed again, then worked again with no intervention, so I sold the Saab. Consumer Reports rates the 2002 Saab 9-3 as a not buy.
I am looking into a 9-3 2002 or 2003 convertible. As a new Saab fan, are there differences between the 2 years - I have heard that the 2003 convertible did not make as many changes as the 2004. The pricing for the '02 is about $2000 or more less than the '03 however the '02 has about 20,000 less miles I guess I am wondering what are the benefits of ... Read More
First, readers who want a Saab at a good price go to luxury motors on the net, click on the Saab symbol, look at MSRP and their price at Downers Grove Saab in Chicago. Hi, I'm posting this here because the people answering questions in this thread seem very knowledgeable . . . I'm considering a Saab 2002 9-3 SE and there's a huge difference between the KBB price ($9200) and the Edmunds price ($6500). This is for a private party sale for a car in good condition with 71,000 miles on it. I'm wondering which price is more realistic.
Have owned a SAAB 9-5 2000 wagon since 2002. Have just suffered catastrophic engine failure at 90k miles due to a failed belt tensioner. Dealer replaced timing belt at 60K and did not suggest that tensioner is just as likely to fail with same result. We would not buy a SAAB again. It's a part time job keeping this car on the road and the quality level is miserable. Seat belts ... Read More
Those "solid black side moldings" conspicuously missing from the 2008 are the reason my 2002 is unmarked after 55K in an urban environment. Same here for my '99 9-5 with 120K and has not been a stranger to mall parking lots. But it looks like the '08 9-3 convertible pictured has body color side moldings. Reviewers always tend to cast aspersions on the quality of the material in Saab interiors. But ... Read More
Those "solid black side moldings" conspicuously missing from the 2008 are the reason my 2002 is unmarked after 55K in an urban environment. My other car, a 2003 Avalon, was introduced as a new model in 2005, again without side moldings. Guess what the #1 dealer-installed option became.
I got my Saab 9-3 last October as my first car. I had been in love with its sharp, updated looks and sporty stance ever since it hit dealer lots in 2002 for the 2003 model year. Saab safety is legendary. The 9-3 and 9-5 didn't win 5-Stars top Safety award from IIHS for nothing...it is truely the safest car on the road money can buy... Compared to my 2002 9-3 hatchback, the current 9-3 is slightly quieter, more nimble and has less turbo lag (based on my experience with a service loaner). The driving experience is probably more middle-of-the-road, and appeals to a wider range of drivers than did the 2002. Interior finish is another matter. My 5-year old "wood" dash and leather seats look new. The interior door panels could be from a luxury model. ... Read More
Your comment, Flyndrive1, caused me to do some web research, and what I found shocked and alarmed me. Stephan, Stephan, Stephan. Your Belgian arrogance speaks for itself. Blessedly the lease on my 2003 9-3 ended last February, so I'm finally free of that car. Well, in 2000 CR recommended the 9-3 because its reliability was passing. It got an "Average" grade, which isn't too shabby. But I think that after 100K miles Saabs tend to bring trouble. Ok, ok thanks for the answers. I understand on the opinion on Edmund's Townhall is valuable stuff when considering purchasing a new car. I also understand people tend to voice dissatisfaction over satisfaction more. So does this mean that the complains on this 9-3 represents a small number of people over all? Also, I noticed that most of the people here who are not happy with their Saabs or 9-3s are ... Read More
I disagree with the poster who says the 900 and the 9-3 are the same car and unreliable. Half of my 900's problems were in the manual transmission. If this gearbox was changed between the 900 and 9-3, please state what production year this happened and what the specifics were. And FWIW, attitude in the dealership's service department is model independent. I have a 9-3. Best car I ever owned. I ... Read More
I disagree with the poster who says the 900 and the 9-3 are the same car and unreliable. I have a 9-3. Best car I ever owned. And the UK Consumers Association ranked the two-year old 9-3 (1999) most reliable tied with three others, none of which was a Mercedes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1470000/1470045.stm The people who have compared the two in the Saabnet board consider the Merc dull. Saab usually has $4000-$5500 incentive and many dealers are willing to sell their cars at invoice because there is another 2% dealer holdback. You can get a loaded auto base 9-3 (not in 2002 though) for less than 25K and a SE for ~$26-7K. In 2001, there was a $5500 incentiove for Viggen. You can do all your calculation. Even a SE has more/similar horsepower and torque than a C230 and ... Read More
Hello everyone: I would just like to say that I am relatively new to this room having only been in the Sabb-buying market for the last 2 weeks. However, during that time I have visited this forum numerous times to read differing opinions regarding the advantages - and more often then not!- disadvantages of buying or leasing a new 2002 Saab. With that that said - I have found this site ... Read More
That Opal must be a lot of fun to drive then. I know my 9-3 certainly was. As was also my 900S. The problem is that "fun" isn't the same thing as "reliable" by most people's definitions. One point on pricing: Aren't saabs generally avail. way below msrp, making a straight price comparison more difficult? They are offering strong incentives right now, as the 2002 is known to be the end ... Read More
Just came back from the dealer. They are offering me a 36 month lease 15k, premium package, 2002 9-3 SE for $2,112 at signing and $375/m. Is this a good deal or do I have room to negotiate?
Saab 9-3 2002. Lease based on 3 yrs, 15k per year, everything rolled in (Virginia tax, tags, bank fee, no down payment) also includes all of your lease loyalty (apparently $500). 9-3 SE with premium package, automatic and metallic paint $393. per month $393. due at lease (1st payment only!)sale price will be $28184. 9-3 SE no premium pack, including automatic and metallic paint $369.08 per month $369.08 due at lease, ... Cleveland 2002 9-3 5 speed base lease (w/ heated seats and black paint, no premium pckg): $259 x 36 mos, $1999 down + fees. Ok, sounds good. WHY no wiggle room on the fees? $495 acquisition fee, and $300+ termination fee. Why pay Saab these ridiculous bank fees. WHY ARE THESE FEES "NON-NEGOTIABLE"? Also, GM is obviously kicking back something to the dealers for these cheap lease deals. How much? After ... Read More
The best advice right now is to shop around. There are some aggressive deals out there, and some REAL aggressive deals. I've been extended a deal for a 2002 9-3 loaded 5-speed for $26,400. I've read on www.saabnet.com of people getting a fully loaded 9-3 w/ auto for 27,200. I was told by more than one dealer that since the Saab interest rate is almost 0 that it doesn't make any ... The lease deal right now for the 9-3 SE is $299/month with a down payment. If you want the car for zero down, the payments equate to $359/month. The SE is the "base model" for 2002. A Viggen will probably run you $60-$80 more a month. Probably looking at high $400s. Saab dealers are willing to negotiate. The 9-3 is being replaced next year (as an '03) with a new platform ... Hi! I noticed there's not a lot of postings at this particular site (9-3) compared to other makes and models. Does this mean everyone loves their Saab? (linking Saab with GM and being an ex and current Acura owner, I somehow doubt that). Regardless, it appears my wife wants to sell her hardcore reliable '95 Integra and buy a 2002 9-3 SE. What has been the experience of the 9-3 owners ... Read More

Back when I got my car the incentive was $5500 on the 9-3 SE!! I got mine at Kachina Saab..the salesman is no longer working for them...too bad he was awesome. The salesman I dealt with at Lund now works at Kachina...Andrew Lucas. Both dealers treated me well but Kachina came through with a better price. If you are looking for an automatic with 8,000 miles I might know where you ... Read More
Can we get the 2002 Saab 9-3SE data posted in the "New" section? The 2002s are in stock, and it'd certainly be a help to have invoice and other data before the 0% financing ends October 31... I'd never want to buy a car without being armed with Edmund's info.
Hey dmf000...You are correct the base models have been discontinued and the 2dr hatchback is only available as the viggen for 2002. The 4dr SE has be decontented and the price has been lowered. Some standard items for 2001 are options on the SE for 2002...still after adding all the options back on the list price on my loaded SE will be $2555 lower for 2002. I am guessing the factory ... Hi, Saab-owners. I understand that for 2002, Saab will no longer be offering the Base 9-3 models. Maybe that's why I found a price online from Carsdirect.com that seems incredibly low - $22.7 for a 2001 Base 3-dr with auto. Is this a good deal? I test drove one and it drove great. I'm partial to hatchbacks, but I noticed, compared to my lowly Ford Probe, that the Saab had very ... Read More
Hey fellow Saabers! I just traded out my 1999 9-3 SE auto for a silver 2001 9-3 SE manual...What a difference!!! I never really appreciated manual until now! The power difference is amazing not to mention the increase in fuel economy.... I should have gotten manual before, but I guess I needed to learn from my mistake. I was also how amazed at how much the dealer got for my car. ... Read More
I'm getting the idea from your last post that you are not quite yet willing to part with your 9-3. As far as cars that have character like the 9-3 the list is short..but depends on what exactly you are looking for in a car. The VW golf GTI turbo will have 180 hp for 2002 and was a blast to drive when it had 150hp but the freeway ride is ... Read More
haven't found any published info on the dealer incentive, but heard from dealers that there is a $5000 incentive on all 9-3s at this point in time. can anybody confirm if that is accurate or is it even larger than $5k. read somewhere that someone was talking about a $9,000 incentive on 9-3 convertibles last year. was wondering if anyone thought the incentive would get larger as Saab will be delivering ... I would venture to guess that the Saab incentives will continue until the dealers sell off all the remaining 2001 and 2002 9-3s. I beleive that the 9-3 is going to be replaced by a new model in 2002/2003. Therefore, although the incentive may continue to go down, as it has from $5000 in January to $4300 in May, it is likely to continue as long as the 9-3s are on ... Read More
I received the same deal in South Florida, $23462, for a 9-3 5Speed with leather, cd, sunroof, heated seats (not like I will be needing them), etc. They offered a 7.2% financing rate also. What about you? It looks like the manufacturer is giving the dealers a huge incentive to move 2000 and 2001 models off the lot for the upcoming 2002 models. Looks like a good deal. I will most ...
