Acceleration Comments:
| This
is the light-pressure turbocharged version of the Volvo in-line
five-cylinder. Light pressure means that power comes in at a
lower rpm for normal city driving, giving up some of the all-out
performance of the high-pressure or T5 version available on
other Volvo cars. With almost 3,700 pounds of vehicle to move
around, it's a little slow off the line until the boost comes
up on the turbo. Once you are on the whistle, the engine revs
angrily toward red-line. Our best quarter-mile run was on the
fourth attempt with our best 30 45, 60 and 75 times coming between
the second and fourth runs, so engine temperature seems well
controlled, an important factor for turbocharged performance.
Shifting for the quarter-mile run was done manually at 6,400
rpm from first to second and 6,300 from second to third. We
used a brake torque start on all of the fastest runs, since
the higher-rpm starts got us into boost quicker. |
Braking Comments:
| Other than a louder ABS operating system
than we'd prefer, the Volvo brakes lived up to their reputation
for excellence. We got short (for this weight of vehicle), repeatable
stops with only 4 feet of difference between the first and fourth
runs. With excellent stability control, you could almost take
your hands off the steering wheel and still go down the road
perfectly straight while heavily braking. One other note was
that after we had completely stopped, the brake pedal would
further depress toward the floor, something that occurred on
every test run. Most likely it's something in the way the Volvo
engineers set up the ABS/EBD (electronic brake distribution)
system. |
Handling Comments:
| For a
big, portly wagon, it moved through the cones well. The more
runs we made through the cones, the more confident we got and
the faster we were able to push the car. We consistently brought
the times down to a very respectable number. The steering wheel
felt one size too large and took large movements of swing from
side to side to get the rest of the car to follow suit because
of the wheel's diameter. Steering feel was also noted as being
a little on the numb side. Despite this and a noted amount of
body roll, the heft was very controllable with some movement
coming from the rear, but not enough to cause concern. The fastest
path through the cones was with as little steering wheel movement
as possible to carry your speed through the cones without scrubbing
it off from too much steering input. Neil G. Chirico |
