SUV Under $25,000

2007 Honda CR-VWinner: 2007 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V has been a favorite small SUV ever since it was introduced years ago. But now this overachiever gets an extreme makeover. And that doesn't mean super-sizing it and stuffing a V6 under the hood. Honda still feels a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine is the best choice, but boosted the power to 166 horses and 161 pound-feet of torque. With fewer buyers opting for a manual gearbox, Honda dropped that option and went with a tweaked five-speed automatic. There is still a choice of all-wheel or front-wheel drive. With such an attractive combination of personality and good looks, it's easy to see why the CR-V is our pick.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser

Borrowing a page from its own history book, Toyota brought back the FJ, turned it into a Cruiser and scored a big hit with this offbeat SUV. Its eye-catching retro styling drew a lot of curiosity when it burst on the market this year. But it's more than a one-trick pony, delivering big-time both on- and off-road. With a smooth, torquey 4.0-liter V6, buyers have a choice of an automatic or manual transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. While this is technically a two-door, it has smaller reverse-opening doors for backseat access. With a rare combination of style and substance, the FJ cruises its way into our Most Wanted awards.
