Large Truck
Winner: 2007 Toyota Tundra
After years of testing the waters of the full-size segment with a slightly smaller pickup, Toyota finally jumped in for real with the 2007 Tundra. Like many of the competitors in the half-ton segment, this fully redesigned truck offers three cab sizes, three trim levels and multiple bed lengths, including an 8-foot, 1-inch box that's one of the biggest in the segment. There are also three engines to choose from: a 4.0-liter V6, 4.7-liter V8 and an all-new 5.7-liter V8 mated to a six-speed automatic. Combined with an all-new chassis, top-spec Tundras can tow over 10,000 pounds. But this Tundra is about more than just numbers, as the interior is one of the most functional and well-trimmed cabins you'll find. It combines the usual stuff like huge cupholders and plenty of storage with high-tech features like Bluetooth connectivity and an optional tailgate backup camera. We'll admit not all of our editors love its aggressive exterior styling, but in every other respect we agreed the Tundra is the truck to beat for 2007.
Honorable Mention: 2007 Dodge Ram
Like the Tundra, the Dodge Ram offers a wide range of body styles and a choice of 4.7-liter and 5.7-liter V8 engines. It's also on the aggressive side in terms of exterior styling, and the interior is one of the better-looking cabins in the class. Look at the Ram's huge center console and well-laid-out dashboard and it's clear where Toyota got some of its ideas for the Tundra. The Dodge Ram comes through on the driving experience, too, as it offers precise steering and a tightly controlled suspension that makes it bearable as an everyday driver. Then there's the Mega Cab, which offers as much passenger space as some sedans. Add it all up and the Dodge Ram is a full-size pickup that offers a little bit of everything for truck buyers who want more than just basic transportation.
