Convertible Over $60,000

2007 Porsche 911Winner: 2007 Porsche 911

Is it the engine wail as the 3.8-liter 355-horsepower engine screams past 6000 rpm? Maybe it's the precision-tuned steering that communicates every pavement nuance? Or perhaps it's the classic styling that only looks better with each passing year? No, it's all of the above, plus the ability to purchase a drop-top 911 in so many forms (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4s, Turbo, etc.) that makes us want one. "Where's the retractable hardtop?" you ask. Our answer: "Who cares?" Unlike so many sports cars, the 911 offers real-world, everyday functionality and confidence. While buying one for commuting purposes only would be a crime, the fact that such an option exists — in such a capable performance car — is perhaps its most impressive feature.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Retractable hardtops used to be an enigma in the automotive world; now they're available for less than $30,000. Does that mean the Mercedes-Benz SL has lost its appeal? Not in the least. The folding metal top was impressive when it hit town in 2003, but so was the powerful V8 engine, confident ride quality and sleek exterior styling. The 2007 SL retains each of these traits while offering an array of performance-enhanced AMG versions. Even the "base" SL550 moves out with a healthy 5.5-liter 382-horsepower V8. But for those with the desire (and cash) to pilot something more, M-B offers the SL55, SL600 and the $186,000 SL65 — a luxurious drop top that gets from zero to 60 in just over 4 seconds.
