Winner: 2007 Ford Mustang

An American classic, the Ford Mustang offers performance and retro styling at an affordable price. A convertible top only adds to its cool factor. The base model drop top comes with a 4.0-liter V6 capable of 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. Upgrade to the GT and you get a 4.6-liter V8 that packs 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with a manual transmission, the GT can muscle from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Both versions offer solid brakes and handle corners and bumps with confidence. As if that's not enough, a 500-hp Shelby GT500 model is also available.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Volkswagen Eos

Hey, good-looking, whatcha got cooking? A zippy 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a power-retractable hardtop that also features a glass sunroof. New to the game, the Volkswagen Eos, named for the ancient Greek goddess of the dawn, enters the convertible market with a body size somewhere between the Golf and the Passat. Its malleable rooftop can be adapted for days at the beach or for shutting out highway traffic. Volkswagen's newest bundle of engineering is quick thanks to its 200-horsepower four-cylinder. Not for wallflowers, the Eos gets lots of attention on the road from passersby. A 250-hp 3.2-liter version will be available later in the year.
