Coupe Under $40,000

2007 Infiniti G35Winner: 2007 Infiniti G35

The 2007 Infiniti G35 sets its sights on the BMW 3 Series, but ends up owning a segment all its own. With class-leading performance, technology and design, the Infiniti is a crowd-pleaser at a relatively modest price. Like the 350Z, the G35 coupe is built on Nissan's FM platform. FM stands for "Front Midship," which refers to the positioning of the engine — a 3.5-liter V6 featuring 24 valves, dual-overhead cams, variable valve timing and an electronically controlled throttle. Output is rated at 280 horsepower with an automatic transmission; opt for the six-speed manual in either and you'll top out at 298. Styling is a standout star on the G35, imparting a sense of luxury, sport and sophistication both outside and in.

Honorable Mention: 2007 Nissan 350Z

Just below the G35 is the apple of Nissan's eye: the 350Z. The 2007 version of the 350Z is a driver's car through and through, offering nearly every advantage of its Infiniti cousin, but slotted more toward the enthusiast than the luxury customer. Inside is a driver-focused cockpit, encouraging you to tempt the 300-horse 3.5-liter V6 past the 4000-rpm mark — the point at which the fun begins. Still, around town the Z is refined and quiet, so you won't disturb the subdivision when creeping out for a late-night spin.
