Base models feature reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines and Honda also offers hybrid and natural-gas versions of the Civic. If you're looking for a little sparkle for your dollars, the performance-oriented Civic Si offers endless miles of amusement. The Si pulls 197 horsepower from Honda's four-cylinder engine and redlines at 8000 rpm. All models are loaded with standard features and safety equipment. Civic interiors are roomy and comfortable with a futuristic two-tier dash design that keeps the analog tachometer in the traditional place but puts a digital speedometer above it at the base of the windshield.

Volkswagen is making a habit of offering upscale vehicles at non-luxury prices. Although not as sporty as the Golf it replaces, the 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit offers a stiffer suspension and solid, competent handling. The Rabbit is equipped with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine capable of producing 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque and is available with a standard five-speed manual transmission or can be upgraded to a six-speed automanual. High-quality interior materials are Audi-like in their refinement and the dash features the blue-and-red color scheme typical of the new VW lineup. With a quiet, comfortable ride and 15 cubic feet of cargo space, the Rabbit is a lot of car for the money.
