Wagon Under $40,000

2007 Audi A4Winner: 2007 Audi A4

The Audi A4 Avant took a top spot again this year, thanks to its superb balance, sprightly handling, ambitious engines and very competitive pricing. Audi's ready-for-anything Quattro drive and the A4's abundant safety features practically dare Mother Nature to do her worst. The A4 line comes with two strong direct-injection engines, the turbocharged 2.0-liter 2.0T and the 3.2-liter V6. The A4's truly deluxe interior outclasses the competition, setting this entry-luxury wagon apart. When it's time to haul gear, the Avant offers 27.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 60.6 cubes with the seats folded. We're particularly fond of the high-performance "S line" package, whose sport suspension tuning and 18-inch performance tires provide excellent roll stability and very firm road grip.

Honorable Mention: 2007 BMW 3 Series

Ah, the BMW 3 Series. Dubbed the 328 instead of last year's 325, BMW's 2007 sport wagon impresses with its new 3.0-liter DOHC inline six-cylinder engine making 230 horsepower. Whether you choose the rear-wheel-drive 328i or the electronically controlled xDrive (all-wheel drive) in the 328xi, BMW's luxurious appointments and sheer fun factor are a siren song that's hard to resist. Firm, yet smooth on the road, the 328i and 328xi are quick and well-balanced. Making an expensive decision just a bit easier are conveniences like easy access through the rear window, free maintenance for 48 months or 50,000 miles, and a very popular panoramic moonroof. Cargo room is tight for this class: 24.8 cubes with the split-folding rear seats up; 60.9 when they're down.
