Sedan Under $60,000
Winner: 2007 BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5 Series has always impressed us with its luxury trappings in a true driver's car. The 5 Series line now comprises several models, with engines ranging from a 3.0-liter inline-6 making 215 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque all the way up to a 4.8-liter V8 making 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque (to say nothing of the top-line 500-horsepower V10 in the M5). No matter which engine you choose, you'll get a sedan that feels rock solid on the highway and nimble through tight turns. It's also safe, quiet and spacious enough inside to carry four adults. The 5 Series may not have every luxury feature imaginable, but it has all the features that count to us.
Honorable Mention: 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
New to the list is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Stuttgart company's midrange sedan between the "entry-level" C-Class and the über-luxury S-Class. Obviously it's working, as the E-Class, last redesigned in 2003, has sold roughly a million models worldwide. It's no wonder, with its sleek and dignified style, a good mix of ride and handling, and a series of V6 and V8 engines that range from the 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 mill in the E350 up to the 500-hp 6.3-liter power plant in the super-high-performance E63 AMG. A recent refresh added higher quality interior materials, mild exterior enhancements and more standard features, all of which make the E Class a luxury sedan with few faults.
