Most Wanted SUV Over $45,000
Interactive Vehicle Tour What's This?

Lexus LX 470Winner: Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 470

Quality and quantity: that's what you get with these paired models from Toyota. In a segment dominated by size, Toyota has pulled away from the pack by adding its trademark quality packaged in straightforward luxury. These hulking SUVs offer power, stability and capability in a tough package. For 2006, Toyota has fitted its 4.7-liter V8 with variable valve-timing technology that results in a welcome increase of 40 horsepower (to 275) over last year's model. Other changes this year include a standard tire-pressure monitor system, and minor exterior styling revisions, which include a new grille, headlamps and taillamps.

Honorable Mention: Lexus GX 470

Like its big brother the LX 470, the GX 470 provides luxury, comfort and capability in an easy-to-drive package. Its third-row seat is small and we're not as fond of its blocky styling, but for those who don't need all the size and space of the LX, the GX 470 is an excellent alternative. A 4.7-liter V8 is the standard engine along with a smooth shifting five-speed automatic. It's not the fastest or the most powerful SUV in its class, but it's easily one of the most refined. Same goes for ride quality, as the GX sails over rough terrain with only minor cabin noise. It may not look like a serious off-roader, but it has the hardware to get dirty when it has to. It's that combination of capability and luxury that makes it one of our favorite luxury SUVs.
