Winner: Ford Mustang

Undoubtedly one of the most critical hits that Ford has produced in years, the 2006 Mustang features value, performance and style all seamlessly interwoven into a classic American design. Vastly improving the looks and performance of its immediate predecessor, the 2006 Mustang convertible will give you all the attention and fun of the original '64. The standard Mustang convertible comes equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 capable of 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque, or you can upgrade to the GT to get a healthy 300-hp, 4.6-liter V8. Both engines sound great, and they deliver performance to match. Ride and handling is excellent, too, making this one convertible that you'll want to drive rain or shine.

Honorable Mention: Mazda MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 Miata has ditched some of its original cuteness with its latest redesign, but it's still a world apart from the Mustang's brash, raw-boned ruggedness. The Miata is every bit as fun as the Mustang, albeit in a totally different way. It has razor-sharp handling, a high-revving four-cylinder motor and ultraquick steering. Gas prices aren't a concern with the Miata's pint-size engine, but expect to pack light as there isn't much cargo room. If you liked previous Miatas, you'll love the 2006 version that much more.
