Most Wanted Wagon Over $35,000
What's This?
Winner: Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Excellent driving dynamics, numerous safety and luxury features and high style make the E-Class our top choice in this category. Long a staple of Mercedes' lineup, this wagon offers both V6 and V8 versions. A seven-speed automanual transmission is fitted to the E350 and E500, the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is optional. A number of high-tech options are available, including the Keyless Go system, self-adjusting active ventilated seats and adaptive cruise control. If you're shopping for a superior wagon, your local Mercedes-Benz dealership would be a good place to start.
Honorable Mention: Mercedes-Benz R-Class
With its eye-catching lines and three rows of two seats, the Mercedes R-Class is part minivan and part sport-utility vehicle. Two powertrains are available: the new 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 or the veteran 5.0-liter, 302-horse V8. Both engines use the superb seven-speed automatic that offers excellent performance and fuel mileage. The R-Class offers full-time all-wheel drive and its Mercedes' Airmatic air suspension system ensures just the right damping for all driving situations. Three distinct driving firmnesses can be dialed into the settings. The interior is nicely executed, with leather upholstery, maple or burled walnut wood, and aluminum trim. Gauges are well placed, controls intuitive and there's almost 10 cubic feet of luggage room in the rear cargo area with the third row seats in place. The R-Class carries a hefty price tag but it also delivers Mercedes trademark safety and elegance.
