Most Wanted Convertible Under $45,000

2005 Audi A4Winner: Audi A4

We've always loved the style of the A4 sedan, yet Audi somehow managed to improve upon those lines with the A4 convertible. And not only does it look good standing still, it feels good behind the wheel. From the well-sorted suspension to the dead-on steering, this is a convertible that can be driven fast or slow with gratifying results every time. With a range that extends from the base 1.8 turbo four-cylinder all the way up to the V8-powered S4, there's a model for the enthusiast right down to the weekend cruiser. Regardless of how fast you're going, this Audi's interior will delight as it's bathed in high-quality materials from head to toe. Usable rear seats and a sizable trunk keep it practical while stability control and rollover protection keep it safe. If you're looking for a stylish, luxurious and fun-to-drive drop top, the A4 has few equals.

Honorable Mention: Lotus Elise

Unlike the A4 that blends luxury and performance into its topless package, the fact that the Elise can lose its top is almost an afterthought. This car is designed for one thing and one thing only — performance. Its combination of an ultralightweight chassis, free-revving four-cylinder and stiff suspension result in a raw track car that can run circles around exotics that cost three times as much. But unlike thrown-together kit cars, this track star uses reliable Toyota power and years of Lotus construction expertise to keep it in one piece. Amenities are few, but that's the idea. If you want seat heaters and a good stereo, this isn't the convertible for you. If you're looking for one of the most incredibly unfiltered driving experiences this side of $50K, however, the Elise has no equal.
