Most Wanted Convertible Under $35,000
Winner: BMW Z4
There were some people who felt this "flame surfaced" design was going just too far. We disagreed. Or was it because, when we got behind the wheel, the superb German-car feeling distorted our sense of vision? Whatever the reason, this roadster grabbed our attention with its refinement, exhilarating handling dynamics and superb engines. Slightly longer than its predecessor, the Z3, the body is stiffer and lighter while retaining rigidity. Handling is even sharper than before, and the new electrically assisted steering rack delivers solid road feel. For power, the Z4 lets you choose between a 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter straight six or a 225-hp, 3.0-liter straight six. Whatever way you set it up, you'll find the Z4 provides the most fun you can have with the top down and an empty road ahead of you.
Honorable Mention: Nissan 350Z
This roadster rarely has to play second fiddle to anything, but this time it came up just short of the Z4 for top honors. With 287 horsepower under the hood, there are more than enough ponies to take on die-hard sports cars let alone cruise with the top down on warm summer nights. Regardless of how you drive it, however, the Z roadster is bound to please. Its sharp-edged looks get noticed at every turn while the precise handling and quick steering always keep it pointed right where you want it to go. And go it does, as this drop top will go from zero to 60 in just over 6 seconds. So whether you want the power and performance of a true sports car or the carefree feeling of a convertible, the 350Z roadster gives you both.
