Most Wanted Wagon Under $35,000
Winner: Audi A4 Avant
There's a lot to be said for Audi's gorgeous wagon. Its sculpted lines are the ultimate in laid-back elegance, commanding attention without being the least bit showy. Its razor-sharp handling keeps you gurgling with bliss on the open road. And you'll fall in love with its cabin; slip inside and you'll find yourself swaddled in a cocoon of modern opulence, where materials are first-rate, build quality is beyond reproach and aesthetics are sleek and engaging. Topping it all off is the fact that the Avant is a few grand cheaper than its stiffest competition. Some believe wagons to be stodgy and dull. The luscious Avant illustrates just how wrong these assumptions can be.
Honorable Mention: Volvo V70
Given its role as family hauler, one trait that most no doubt value above all others in their wagon is safety. With features like whiplash-reducing headrests and head curtain airbags, this is one area in which the V70 shines — hardly a surprise since it is, after all, a Volvo. Of course, the V70 offers lots more to win you over, like wonderfully comfortable accommodations, loads of room relative to the competition and more performance than you'd likely expect from a wagon. And don't forget its muscular exterior, miles removed from that of the boxy Volvos of yesteryear. If you need family transportation, you need to take a second look at the thoroughly competent V70.
